Publisher's summary

"This is a story about love.

"It's also a story about hate, which is why I left New York in the first place. You don't fly halfway across the world to live with a bunch of people you never met, just for a laugh.

"I guess if I'd known where it was all going to lead, I might have thought twice about stepping onto that plane. I might have worried a little more about Edmond being my cousin.

"And me being 15.

"But I didn't. And in the end, those things didn't matter as much as you think they would.

"In the end, the world had bigger things to worry about than us."

Critic reviews

"This riveting first novel paints a frighteningly realistic picture of a world war breaking out in the 21st century....Like the heroine, readers will emerge from the rubble much shaken, a little wiser and with perhaps a greater sense of humanity." (Publishers Weekly)

breathtaking... well worth it

I absolutely loved this movie. I don't care what anyone says about the love interest! this book was so beautiful. what a heart-wrenching thing to be a child and go through a war. to be a child and be in love and for terrible things to happen. I feel like the author really has such a beautiful way with words and took such a great concept and idea, and molded it into such a wonderful story.

Beautiful

I love this book to pieces. My goodness I got lost in the story of daisy and piper. I love love love it. I wish there was a different pov or something to get more from this book.

Movie was actually better

I read this when I was in 5th grade, I think. I saw the movie this year and decided to "reread" the book. Overall great, but I for whatever reason think the movie's arch and ending were much better with Isaac's death leading to Edmond's insanity. Daisy being taken away for a year seems so out of place for what was going on in the story, and the movie created better tension with the sad death of Isaac.

So heartbreaking

A very easy book to read when it comes to length and language used but hard to read when it comes to details of war.

Well done

Very convincing characters. I felt like I was right there with them through all the adventures. An interesting take on how war brings out character and hope in people.

Not a good one

This is a tale that tries and fails to be a Lord of the Flies tale. It is well written and that is why it gets 2 stars. The story is lacking. There is incest, which really turns me off, along with war and death. Don't waste your time.

Are you kidding me!?!

Sooooo we're just not going to know how the kids have "abilities" ?
this book seems like it's the outline of what could be a good book but there is no meat? I don't care about any of the characters because you never get more than the tiniest bit of insight into them ....THERE ARE NO DETAILS IN THIS BOOK ABOUT ANYTHING
