About this listen

A must-have resource for anyone who lives or works with young kids, with an introduction by Adele Faber, coauthor of the international best-seller The Boston Globe dubbed "The Parenting Bible".

For over 35 years, parents have turned to How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk for its respectful and effective solutions to the unending challenges of raising children. Now, in response to growing demand, Adele's daughter, Joanna Faber, along with Julie King, tailor How to Talk's powerful communication skills to children ages two to seven.

Faber and King, each a parenting expert in her own right, share their wisdom accumulated over years of conducting How To Talk workshops with parents and a broad variety of professionals. With a lively combination of storytelling, cartoons, and fly-on-the-wall discussions from their workshops, they provide concrete tools and tips that will transform your relationship with the young kids in your life.

What do you do with a little kid who...won't brush her teeth...screams in his car seat...pinches the baby...refuses to eat vegetables...runs rampant in the supermarket? Organized according to common challenges and conflicts, this book is an essential emergency first-aid manual of communication strategies, including a chapter that addresses the special needs of children with sensory processing and autism spectrum disorders.

This user-friendly guide will empower parents and caregivers to forge rewarding, joyful relationships with terrible two-year-olds, truculent three-year-olds, ferocious four-year-olds, foolhardy five-year-olds, self-centered six-year-olds, and the occasional semi-civilized seven-year-old. And, it will help little kids grow into self-reliant big kids who are cooperative and connected to their parents, teachers, siblings, and peers.

This book works

I first listened to this book 3 years ago when my oldest was a defiant toddler. I found that my natural reaction to his defiance was to yell, use timeout, and get frustrated; and that it wasn’t going to work. I listened to this book and applied Joannas simple strategies with much success. He is now almost 5 and has wonderful listening skills, and we have a great relationship.

I am now Re-listening for a refresher for my second born and it is already working. I am so thankful for this book!

The tips aren’t magic and she doesn’t sugar coat it, it’s hard work! It’s a commitment to get creative at connecting with your child to correct their behavior. It’s not as hard as spinning your wheels on frustration though.

Whiny narrator

loved the content but the main narrator's voice got on my nerves, especially when imitating little kids, Wich happens a lot in the book.

super helpful

I have been a teacher of preschool to middle school kids and I am the single mom of a 3 year old boy. This book has been instrumental in helping me improve my parenting, especially during quarantine. These tools are invaluable, and the stories that go along with each chapter help give clarity about the different ways to use the tools. I HIGHLY recommend this book for parents and teachers. I will definitely read this over and over again.

Content great! Voice not-so-much...

This is a great collection of scenarios that are relevant to how to talk to little kids. I’d have given all 5 stars but the voice of the main narrator is not easy to listen too. Her tone throughout sounds like a smart mouth who thinks the content is dumb. That may just be me but I struggled to finish bc of her voice. Thank goodness other voices were used at times. That helped!

mother of 1 and teacher

I originally decided to listen to this book to help me survive the terrible twos. What I discovered is that the tools I was learning would help me professionally too. I teach kindergarten and have been working on implementing these ideas into my classroom. It's not perfect but it has helped. I would recommend this book to any parent or teacher.
