About this listen

Guiding becomes a deadly business when Kate Shugak accepts a contract to shepherd a group of German computer executives on an Alaskan hunting retreat. As the fog rolls in and people start dying, Kate and her boyfriend Jack discover how very seriously their charges take the sport. A hunter's moon signals a season of gathering and plenty, but Kate finds herself out of resources and at her most vulnerable. She must find the strength to not only survive, but repay. This time, the guide becomes the huntress.

Worthwhile Series

What made the experience of listening to Hunter's Moon the most enjoyable?

Characters, location. Good plots not too intricate. Worthwhile easy listening.

What other book might you compare Hunter's Moon to and why?

Am gradually reading all titles in the series. Not too intense, just easy decent reads.

What about Marguerite Gavin’s performance did you like?

She is a very good fit for the lead character and does an overall good job. Pleasing.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Murder in Alaskan Wilderness

Any additional comments?

Not the strongest ever crime mystery genre series but has me listening to title-after-title

Not my favourite Dana Stabenow novel

I am a bit of a romantic, so I did not enjoy this story as much as the other titles I have read. There were intriguing twists but it did not leave me with a desire to read and not put the book down. Other books in the series kept me up all night reading.

Excellent but disappointed

The book is excellent but I wish it had ended differently. Very disappointed with the story. Not sure if I will continue the series. I'm not sure why the woman can't be a hero and have someone they love in their life. I wish I could find an author not threatened by love.

The ending.

Not a book with a happy ending. It isn't like any of the previous books by Stabenow.

Pivot Point

This book is chock full of action, suspense, mystery, adventure, joy and sorrow. As the title suggests, it's about big game guiding in Alaska--gone bad in this instance. Stabenow's writing is great and kept me on the edge. Her characters are very real, the scenes vivid and believable. The pivot point of the series is in here, and I almost fell off my bicycle when I heard it. Then, Kate goes mad with rage and serves up the perpetrator to a pervert--that's real revenge. With that said, I wonder what's next?

Greed,Revenge and Great Frontier Justice

I love this book as it features Jack and some Mutt, but not enough to have me seek out more books trying to find the previous stories that feature them in heaps...So this author is not for me. Too often I felt this author writes in two dimensional for me at least. Author has us right there inside Kates head but???? I Can not put my finger on the exact reasons but I think, the mystery is not author’s main focus but the journey of the characters. However many of the characters lack depth for me eg Bobby who is in other stories and maybe featured, but I do not feel compelled to seek out that story. Books 10,12 are Trooper Jim stories, but reviews say #10 is not Ms Gavin narrating? I can only think that is because that book came from Audio Book stand which would have been on CD or Cassette and copied to download. The sample is poor quality and reviews like the story but not the narrator who was supposed to be Ms Gavin. Reviewers did not feel the voice had the richness and range of Ms Gavin other work . The poor quality took away the richness of Ms Gavin 2014 + narrations of whom I am a new fan. See Happieness for Beginners
I do use the 1.2 speed to match the adventure, give it a try.

One of her best

Would you listen to Hunter's Moon again? Why?

Yes, I'd listen to it again but I still have the rest of the this series and her others to finish first.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Love Kate of course, but the irascible Uncle is also one of my favorites.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I've mentioned this before, and it's so true -- the thing about listening to the book now compared with reading it when it came out is that I've forgotten so much. So much, In fact, that I kept wondering if I'd somehow missed this one. Until the scene that made me cry. That scene was still in my mind's eye after all these years, but I was caught by surprise when it crept up on me again. I knew it was going to happen but I had no idea it was coming in this book.

Any additional comments?

Marguerite Gavin did an excellent job on this one, even with the male voices. Kudos to her!
