About this listen

In the aftermath of a global solar flare that has decimated the human population and wreaked havoc on Earth, Dr. Riley Poole embarks on a treacherous 1,500-mile journey to learn the fate of her two youngest children.

After making the heart-wrenching decision to leave her injured daughter, Julia, in Virginia, Riley and her new husband, Coop, strike out into the wilderness toward Colorado. Along the way, they cross paths with old acquaintances and combine resources to travel together. Riley and Coop soon get life-altering news and learn that one member of their group has put them in grave danger, forcing them to stay one step ahead of a hostile, rogue government.

Will Riley have the wit and courage to survive the journey and reunite her family?

Great story line

At least a credible story with a few twists. Maybe a bit on the optimistic side.

No OPSEC At All, Poor Coop

Poor Coop, stuck with this whiny, selfish, arrogant, hardheaded, know-it-all woman, Dr Riley Poole-Cooper. Her rash, take-charge attitude minus ANY sort of OPSEC nearly gets him killed over and over again. People give her her way to avoid what would very clearly be a massive tantrum of epic proportions, and her daughter Julia shows signs of being just like her. SMH, she gives out entirely too much information wayyyy too often, making rash decisions for her entire cast without taking time to listen to the facts, this choosing FOR other people that often have deadly consequences. Supposedly smart, knowing they are being hunted, she willfully writes her full information down instead of disguising herself and even small portions of her particulars leaving a traceable roadmap for her pursuers in spite of knowing it wouldn't be computer verifiable to anyone. I don't understand why men are even characters at all in this book they are so devalued, weak and only foils for her to fix. Coop doesn't die, but I'm not finishing the series because I already checked out reviews...Riley leaves her husband, brand new baby and all the rest to go off alone to rescue Julia. Had she listened to Adrian re: herbs/plants she would have been using mint, red raspberry, milk thistle and passionflower as teas to help with her excessive nausea and to prime herself to birth without the pre-eclampsia. All 4 would have been in Adrian's wheelhouse, nor did she ever do more than stick her nose up in the air over foods that helped her survive... arrogant!! Everything that would aid her ability to actually survive without immediate help, she actively scorned!!

So what was good about the story...the Amish man's help, the Western States seceding from the corrupt president's governance, learning more about Adrian and the narrator Eva Kaminsky. These were angles not usually taken in apocalyptic books that perhaps should be considered.

My second listen

Really good book. Not your run of the mill post apocalyptic adventure. This one has more depth and some pretty awesome characters.

I surprisingly like it

This book seemed more reasonable than the first, where a ridiculous amount of bad things happened to our main characters. Months later I was still wanting to continue with the story so I listened to this one and I’m glad I did.
