About this listen

Could you or someone you know be married to a sociopath? The author of this book was, but it took her twenty years to figure it out. She wrote this book to make sure the same thing doesn’t happen to other people. Onna thought the classmate she married was her Prince Charming—kind, honest, loving, and intellectually vibrant—but she was wrong. That “spark” she felt wasn’t true love, it was a trap—custom designed to ensnare her. Onna’s repayment for investing twenty years into her marriage and unwittingly providing her husband with a façade of normalcy was ongoing gaslighting and chronic emotional assault, all twisted and framed so she would attribute them to her own apparent shortcomings. By the time she understood what was really happening, her emotional, physical and financial health were in peril. Why did her husband do it? Because that’s what sociopaths do. Sociopaths are far more common than most people imagine. To help others recognize the subtle warning signs that they might be in the crosshairs of a well-camouflaged sociopath, Onna shares her story while detailing the techniques her ex-husband used to control her behavior and erode her self-esteem. She also explores the psychological research regarding why such methods are so effective, why it is hard to understand what is happening while you are in the situation, why the cumulative effect is so ruinous, and, more importantly, why you must escape if you suspect you are in a similar situation. This insightful, cautionary tale is a must read for men and women alike. A must read for every woman who is in a relationship or wants to be in a relationship. Sociopaths and psychopaths are not only criminals that take lives by crimes that are visible. They are covert criminals.

I live the same hell of life with a sociopath too. Listening to this book felt like I was listening to my story.

This book will open your eyes to sociopaths or even just toxic individuals. If your second guessing then that is more of a reason why you need to read it.

A must read if you feel like you're in a toxic relationship

I’m currently living this hell. Somewhere around Chapter 46, I had to pause the audiobook because I felt my future playing out in real time. The way Onna continues to endure post-separation abuse—it’s terrifyingly familiar. I know it won’t end. But knowing that helps me prepare emotionally for the next storm.

Like her, I was fooled more than once by fake niceties, false hope, and temporary calm. But now I know better. I hold my ground. I hold my boundaries. I protect my energy for my kids. My story mirrors hers so closely, it’s heartbreaking. And I know I’m not alone—because so many of us share this exact same pain.

Thankfully, we can find each other now. And because of that, I “only” wasted 12 years. Books like this, and platforms like Narctok, are lifelines. We learn from one another. We heal out loud. And that healing becomes protection—for ourselves, and for the next generation.

To the dismissive reviewers: if you haven’t lived it, you don’t know. But for those of us who have—this book is validation, clarity, and strength.

You are not alone. You are not crazy. When a woman chooses to lose 50% of her custody and fall into poverty just to escape, something is deeply wrong—and yet survivors are almost always vilified.

This book is a mirror. It’s a flashlight. And it’s a warning.

I love the way the author just genuinely told her story. So validating to those who have gone through it. I feel the pain of the author and my heart goes out to her. Somehow, I felt comforted. I always get so upset with myself because it went on for so many years in my own life. I also have children, and often feel like it will never really end. It’s nice to know that I am not alone. It’s a long hard road back to yourself but worth every second. It becomes a lifelong journey. Thank you so much for writing this book. It is the hard truth and it made me cry.

Very relatable. Unfortunately, very knowledgeable on the depth dove in order to uncover the light at the end of the tunnel.

Heartbreaking & Enlightening

Well written and sadly spot on— anyone who’s lived or is living through this type of relationship, my prayers are with you and you’re not alone. Slowly, it gets better.

Finally someone gets it— well done, thank you

Excellently written and easy for anyone who has dealt with this type of spouse, to relate to the author’s marriage and struggles. Unfortunately, this type of relationship happens way too many times to a lot of us.

Genuineness of the author. I identified with her life.

This book looks like it may be, the only validation I ever get for what I’ve been through. Spot on with the Triangulation, Gaslighting and Poor him pitty parties… 1) He really is an A** and I kick him out of the apartment 2) He then threatens to kill himself, brings on the ‘crying’ when he asks to speak to our 6 yr old daughter > making her feel bad and cry 3) When I don’t give in to his performance, INSTANT VERBAL ATTACK on my character, my past mistakes, etc. 4) Withholds all financial support and avoids his financial responsibilities 5) goes silent for a couple days, and then texts “I love you” or “I’ve been crying for days” or “I can’t believe you can just give up on us without ever trying” ~cycle begins again~ WORSE CASE OF GROUNDHOG DAY EVER!!! But not a sole can understand, validate or aid in your healing if they have not gone through this crazy making twilight zone black hole relationship. Thank you SOOO much for each word you wrote in this book! -Britni
