About this listen

It's time to leave the leadership obsession behind. It's never been about leading. “Leadership” has become a runaway obsession for those who are called to equip the body of Christ for service in the Kingdom of God. The concept of “followership” is all but lost in the wake of this leadership fetish, a near hypnotic obsession. Jesus’ clear call, and the pattern of New Testament leadership, are actually found in a pattern of followership. We’ve been told otherwise but when it comes to a movement in our churches, our families, or the workplace, everything rises or falls on followership.

Sweet proposes an intentional shift from leadership cults to followership cultures. He critiques the issue of leadership obsession but focuses on reigniting a passion for the "follow me" theme found throughout the gospels and the entire New Testament. Building on a set of metaphors/images, he stirs the imagination by showing what it means to be a follower of Christ and explains the vital cog that followership and the first follower play in helping others enter into the Kingdom of God.

I Am A Follower moves listeners:

  • from leaders that are over to followers that are among
  • from sages and gurus to scouts and guides from Saul's armor to David's sling
  • from having the right answers to asking the right questions
  • from architects to gardeners

A manual for those on the Journey

What made the experience of listening to I Am a Follower the most enjoyable?

The content and the author reading it.

Who was your favorite character and why?

the First Follower. An in-depth character study of one who is truly willing to follow Christ.

What about Leonard Sweet’s performance did you like?

Extremely! The closest thing to having him at home with you. He not only has a great voice to listen to, but his inflections and emphasis on key items adds to the experience. Sweet is a wordsmith, and anyone else would have difficulty processing the creative use of the language.

This is not a superficial description of a token relationship with Christ. Be prepared to listen several times.

You are listening to a professor, with all of his gifted senses, being used to show the depth and resource of Christ.

Be prepared to be challenged, while inspired.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Constantly; but most specifically when I realized how valuable it is, to accomplish the depth and art of being a follower of Jesus Christ. Much of the Christian world places additional value on the contribution of a leader compared to a "follower."

In this study, it becomes apparent that any of us can fulfill life's greatest potential, in fulfilling, what Dr. Sweet refers to as being a "first follower."

There is no longer Jew nor Greek, male or female, leader or follower, but we are all little ones in Christ.

Take advantage of your sensory skills in giving your full listening and hearing concentration to these insightfu reflections.

Also read "Nudge" and "Viral" to gain insight in what evangelism should entail, and how the next revival may start in our midst.

Any additional comments?

One last reflection;after listening to "I Am a Follower," if I could pen the words on my headstone, it would simply say ...... a follower of Jesus Christ. There is no greater commission, and fulfillment. A frist follower will impact the world for Christ.

I Needed To Hear This

This book really helped me shift my thinking to be a follower of Jesus more than being a church leader. Being a church leader is great, but Len Sweet really shares his heart about following Jesus using his great artistic styling of words.
