Publisher's summary

If not being able to read was a disease, it would be an epidemic. Millions of Americans can’t read, but illiteracy often goes unacknowledged or unnoticed. If you are the parent or teacher of a child who struggles with reading, you know the painful way that illiteracy steals their confidence and robs them of the joy that comes from learning. William Manzanares IV - a member of the Puyallup Tribe in Washington state - wrote I Can’t Read to give the literacy conversation a much-needed jump-start.

William, who grew up unable to read and later learned he had dyslexia, overcame these obstacles and transformed himself into a successful serial entrepreneur. In this inspirational story, William shares strategic superpowers that worked for him in the hopes it will improve literacy for those who can’t read. The book includes personal anecdotes to inspire kids everywhere - especially young Native Americans - to pursue their dreams.

Informative and inspiring!

This is a short and sweet listen that definitely encouraged me and motivated me and got me excited to read (and listen to) more books! William has an amazing story which is inspiring and I also learned quite a few things about reading disabilities that I was unaware of before. Also, he's generous enough at the end of book to give his personal recommended book reading list and it's a great one - I am definitely planning to dive into that list in the very near future.

A powerful punch of a memoir

A short memoir written through the eyes of a man who’s dyslexia caused him to struggle with reading most of his life.

This is an amazingly inspiring story of triumph over disadvantage.
From being unable to read to becoming a successful serial entrepreneur, investor, and now author. It was great to learn just how far grit and self-determination can take a person.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who has or knows someone who struggles with reading difficulties.

Life with Dyslexia

TITLE: I Can’t Read: A Guide to Success Though Failure
BY: William Manzanares IV
NARRATED BY: William Manzanares IV
DISCLAIMER: This book was given to me free in return for my honest review.

BRIEF SUMMARY
In this memoir William describes his struggles with reading throughout his life and the challenges that came along with it. His goal is to help people who can’t read or those who know someone who can’t read pursue their dreams.

ABOUT THE NARRATOR
This book is both written and narrated by William and while I normally stay clear of book like this it was a good fit. You can hear his struggle though his voice and I think that’s important part of him getting his point across.

THE BOOK
The beginning of this book really hooked me! A child with dyslexia, counting desks, special reading classes. It’s my childhood crammed together in a nutshell. When I was younger, I use to blame the fact that we switched schools a lot for my bad grades. It felt like I could never catch up because I learned slower than everyone else and was always starting and stopping somewhere new. At some point I just kind of shut down and told myself it was my choice to get bad grades. It was less work anyways.

My sister was the one who never gave up on me. Just two years older she forced me to read when ever she could and helped me understands words that I just couldn’t get on my own. In high school I turned my act around and was able to get mostly A’s with a few B’s. I really haven’t noticed my dyslexia in a long time I just kind of figured that I finally deciphered the English language but instead of showing up in an array of mix matched letters I think it shows up in other ways now a days. I still have issues reading words I don’t have in my “word bank”, reading books I haven’t practiced out loud still makes me nervous, and writing is sometimes challenging. Still I think I do well.

This book was great because it brought back memories that I’d put behind me and reminded me of how far I’ve come. There were some things I didn’t quite agree with and quite a few times that I felt had a one-way point of view but overall I enjoyed listening.

Inspiring and Motivational

This is the first book I have finished from front to back in along time. Will’s journey is inspiring and informative on how not give up. I’ve always believed in hard work to accomplish goals and listening to Will’s thoughts for his success have only made me want to work harder.

a must read/listen for those affected by dyslexia

I really enjoyed this book. It was not only what I needed to hear to support my son, but what I needed to hear for myself. The message of having grit and putting the work in without giving up; it is perfect. This is a book I will come back to as a reminder to myself of where I should be and what I should do. William Manzanares IV is truely an inspiration and positively making a difference in more lives than he will ever know!
