About this listen

Ecstatic Sufi Poetry Comes Alive

To fully experience the ecstatic poetry of the Middle and Near East, you must hear it as originally intended: stirred ablaze by inspired music and rhythms before a live audience. In I Want Burning, Coleman Barks fuses his passionate scholarship with a deep feeling for the poetry of Rumi, Hafiz (a 14th-century Sufi mystic, called "one of the jewels in the necklace of Persian poetry"), and Lalla (an exquisite Kashmiri female poet of the 14th century).

Includes more than 50 translations of this rare and moving work, accompanied by vocals, Peruvian flute, harmonium, and other instruments.

I adore Coleman Barks, but somehow this collection was just way overdone with the music. Too loud and distracting. I like to hear Coleman by himself and maybe a soft background music appropriate to this time and era.

Please, Turn Down the Music.

To the ones who criticize this work : all I have to say is most of us who are listening to this CD are westerners and it is easier for us to appreciate something we can relate to. So if Barks work tinges Rumi with the West, it brings Rumi closer to our comprehension. You cannot appreciate what you cannot relate to. So bravo Mr. Barks for bringing the beauty of the East to our grasp.

I love Rumi and Coleman Barks interpretation.

It's not just a reading. It's a full performance, complete with musical accompaniment, which is how the these poems were meant to be presented. It's something to listen to again and again.

Excellent

Coleman Barks’ gives us this insightful and accessible interpretation of Rumi, presented here wonderfully sublime.

Just wish that the mix was better. the music, which is nice, can be too loud at times and drowns out and distracts from beautiful words.

Lovely but music can overwhelm words
