Before reading the book, I made and hung "missing" posters around the classroom with pictures of characters and hats. The preschoolers loved it, and when we read the book, they were deeply interested and engaged in the story. It was a great experience to listen to the story while searching for a hat.

A significant departure from candy-coated or happily-ever-after picture books, I Want My Hat Back lets the reader come to their own conclusions about the fate of a meddling woodlands creature. In so doing, Jon Klassen demonstrates how subversiveness and open-ended storytelling can absolutely resonate with children if handled smartly. If you haven't experienced a live listening and reading of this book with a classroom of kids, you're missing out—especially regarding the inevitable, lively debate that's sure to ensue when the story is finished. (This audio experience should absolutely be paired with the physical book for maximum enjoyment.)

A Perfect Read-along Production
