About this listen

Sarah Bakker has spent years getting over her love for her brother’s best friend Michael Thomas. What started out as a schoolgirl crush had deepened into much more—or at least she thought so before he headed off to war. And when he went MIA, Sarah thought her heart would never heal.

But when her best friend persuades her to go skiing, Sarah is pleasantly surprised to run into their old classmate Lucas Williams. As Sarah begins to spend time with Lucas, she begins to feel that she can pick up the pieces of her heart and start over again.

When Michael Thomas is found alive and returns home, Sarah is thrown together with him to help prepare for the town’s annual Christmas pageant. She realizes she has to make a decision: allow herself to fall in love with a man without baggage who loves her or take a chance on the man she has loved all her life but who may not be able to love her back. Perhaps Sarah will finally find the love she longs for—even if it’s only in her dreams.

From the blurb, you think this book is centered around the h and her choice, but it's really centered around the H giving the choice away in the 2nd chapter. Although I like that the H was a vet with PTSD, there were so many implausible facts, it detracted from the story. Towards the last 1/3rd of the book, the characters started bringing out their bibles and quoting from them. it was super inconsistent. *Spoiler alert* the H was missing for 2.5 years and when he came back, no one mentioned how they prayed for his safe return and he didn't pray during his captivity. he was saved and returned to the states but recouped for 3 months. His family was not allowed to visit and no one bothered to mention that he was rescued to the h?

I enjoy Christmas stories so I thought I’d give this one a try. The story overall was fairly predictable. It didn’t seem to go deep enough somehow. Possibly it just wasn’t my type of story. I didn’t care for the audio narration. It sounded somewhere between muffled and tinny, and at times the voice sounded more like ‘reading’ than acting.

This is a touching faith-based story of a soldier who is MIA in Afghanistan and the family he left when he went to war. Sarah Bakker has been in love with Michael Thomas for 15 years, but because he's her brother's best friend, she's held back her feelings. Before he deployed, Michael had wanted to tell Sarah that he loved her, but at the last second, changed his mind. Since she got the news about Michael, she hasn't been in a good state of mind. Maybe as a sign of better things to come, she begins to date a boy from high school who had a crush on her. Lucas is really a good guy and he definitely deserved Sarah, but even Lucas knows that Sarah is taken. When her dreams come true and Michael is found alive, the journey to their HEA is a bumpy ride. The narration is wonderfully done by Amelia Mendez. Her dynamic voice, solid pace and emotional inflection are the keys to bringing each character to life.

Very sweet!

I received a review copy of this audiobook, and it was listed as “contemporary adult romance” with no indication that it was Christian romance. It had lots of scripture, which is simply something I don’t want in the books I read. The story was sweet, but predictable. Unfortunately, I couldn’t connect with the characters or their problems—they felt superficial despite the hardships they face. Lastly, the audio was terrible. It’s very tinny and echoes. The narrator added odd laughing inflections to narrative sentences. This one was a complete miss for me.

Lots of scripture
