About this listen

The queen of suspense is back!

Mary Higgins Clark’s new novel - the 30th and most spine-chilling of her long career as America’s most beloved author of suspense fiction - is about the newest and most up-to-date of crimes: identity theft. Who has not read about - or experienced - with a sinking feeling the fear that someone else out there may be using your credit cards, accessing your bank account, even stealing your entire identity.

In I’ll Walk Alone, Alexandra “Zan” Moreland, a gifted, beautiful interior designer on the threshold of a successful Manhattan career, is terrified to discover that somebody is not only using her credit cards and manipulating her financial accounts to bankrupt her and destroy her reputation, but may also be impersonating her in a scheme that may involve the much more brutal crimes of kidnapping and murder. Zan is already haunted by the disappearance of her own son, Matthew, kidnapped in broad daylight two years ago in Central Park - a tragedy that has left her torn between hope and despair.

Now, on what would be Matthew’s fifth birthday, photos surface that seem to show Zan kidnapping her own child, followed by a chain of events that suggests somebody (but who, Zan asks herself desperately, and why?) has stolen her identity.

Hounded by the press, under investigation by the police, attacked by both her angry ex-husband and a vindictive business rival, Zan, wracked by fear and pain and sustained only by her belief, which nobody else shares, that Matthew is still alive, sets out to discover who is behind this cruel hoax.

What she does not realize is that with every step she takes toward the truth, she is putting herself - and those she loves most - in mortal danger from the person who has ingeniously plotted out her destruction.

Another fun Mary Higgins Clark listen

A fun mystery which will keep you entertained. I thought I had figured out who the "bad guy" was but she had me fooled until close to the end. A nice, light mystery which isn't so scary that you have to leave all the lights on after listening!

Terrific!

Loved it. Very well written. Just when I thought I had solved the mystery, I was thrown another curve ball. Love Jan Maxwell. Her voice is wonderful. Here I go on to another Mary Higgins Clark mystery!

Good story, not my favorite

Mary Higgins Clark is one of my favorite authors. With that being said, this one was my least favorite so far. This story seemed to go on forever. Regardless, I’m still a fan and will continue to read her novels.

Good but fell short

I think the history is interesting and keep you engaged while listening. However, there are some aspects of the characters that are quite shallowly dealt.

Can't go wrong with Mary Higgins Clark

What did you love best about I'll Walk Alone?

A favorite author of mine for suspense.

What does Jan Maxwell bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

My 1st audiobook. It takes some getting used to to stay focused. Having read the book made it a bit easier. I enjoyed her different voices.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This is an emotional story. What are the ramifications on her son? How can she hold it together under the strain?

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed the heroine's interior design career.

Beware, sensitive subject

Good sale book with a professional narrator, don’t Miss Jan Maxwell, reading Sandra Brown’s the switch, excellent. This book from MHC is well written, but the subject matter is not my personal cup of tea as it involves child abduction that goes beyond Decency but very imaginative from the author. I love strong heroines, but this story involves characters who are afraid to tell, and afraid not to tell. The above stars are my personal rating as to wanting to re listen to a book a 2nd time, so only 5 stars get it as I have over 1500 books. So if you are a fan of Miss Clark, enjoy, as it is a frantic ride of heartache.

A Page Turner

I enjoyed the twists and turns and surprises. The characters were believable. Being from North Jersey related to the NY locations and landmarks.

Very enjoyable book!

I loved this book! A pleasant one to listen to while driving; it wasn't too intense, easy to follow, but interesting enough that I didn't wait to get back on the road to finish it. It was my first of Mary Higgins Clark's and I plan to read more of her novels. I also enjoyed the narrator - easy to listen to, good character voices.
