great book

at first, I thought this book was going to be boring. I am so glad I continued the story. Now I need to know what happens next

Predictable and Unlikable Main Character

Little underlying structure to magic. Seemed to do what the writer needed except for the whole plastic thing. The main character is unlikable. He is a murdering alcoholic. The only thing that intrigued me was the living house. Poorly written conversations. I get tired of the main character always being a jerk and bantering back and forth with every other character. Over all a poor read. I doubt I will move on.

So good until the end.

The ending makes the rest of the book feel like an introduction to the world but makes everything that happens to that point meaningless. I was loving every bit of it until the last chapter.

Loved it!

I really enjoyed this and if they ever make this into a movie I hope it’s Ryan Reynolds as Doc. Getting started on book 2!

Meh

It's not terrible, and the poor voicing of it hurts it a lot, but it still just wasn't that well written. Main character was pretty boring and the side characters were all the typical sidekick levels, just not amusing or interesting enough.

Awesome Series!!

I am having the best time with this and the Andrew Rufus series (same world). These are fun books with plenty of action and lots of backstory. The characters are super likeable and the villains get their just rewards! The poor reviews made me think on this one for a long time before I jumped in but I am so glad I did. The first book in a series is always a little clunky. Give this a shot and know that as the story moves along it becomes hard to turn these books off.

As for Michael Cummings, he is fantastic! He has a wide range of voices and is very good at using the same one for the correct characters all the time so that you know who is speaking from voice alone. His timing and cadence are spot on and in 15 books I've only heard him mispronounce a couple of words which is super refreshing.

It took a while but was good in the end

I couldn’t help but feel all of the similarities to the Dresdin Files. Advisory talking plant vs a skull. But in the end the story took on more of its own and the ending was action packed and fun. Enough for me to read the next one.

Lackluster narration kills this

I'm sure the story was better than it seemed, but the lack of dynamic narration really just sucked almost all the enjoyment out of this one.
