Tried this title out, excited to listen to sequels

First time trying out a Warhammer novel, can recommend heartily. Excellently voice acted, great story in a very dynamic sci-fi/space fantasy universe.

A noir detective thriller in the WH40k universe.

I will say first that I have now read all books in this trilogy. They're all worth the read but this entry is by far the most excellent.

I will agree with other reviewers who say the character development is slightly lacking. Dan Abnett, in my experience, is not a brilliant character artist. They're all acceptable with a few cases of exceptional. Most of the characterization actually comes from the incredible narrator here, Toby Longworth. He is a great protagonist and fills in the blanks for some of the lesser fleshed out personalities using his awesome range of accents.

The strength of the writing is in the mystery, the plot twists, the journey through the established universe. These were my first WH40k novels ever, and I now feel comfortably familiar with the setting.

Read this book if you enjoy excellent action sequences and a good, gritty investigation.

As a final note: one of the most memorable moments in this book is the pursuit which occurs in the first chapter. I mention this because you should know within the first couple of chapters whether or not you will enjoy this story. This book does not have a slow beginning. Prepare to launch immediately into the action.
