When a guest dies in the B&B she helps her aunts run, a young witch must rely on some good old-fashioned investigating to clear her aunt's name in this magical and charming new cozy mystery.

For 400 years, the Warren witches have used their magic to quietly help the citizens of the sleepy New England town of Evenfall thrive. There's never been a problem they couldn't handle. But then Constance Graves - a local known for being argumentative and demanding - dies while staying at the bed and breakfast Brynn Warren maintains with her aunts. At first, it seems like an accident...but it soon becomes clear that there's something more sinister at work, and Aunt Nora is shaping up to be the prime suspect.

There's nothing Brynn wants more than to prove Nora's innocence, and it hurts her to know that even two years ago, that might have been easier. Brynn, after all, is a witch of the dead - a witch who can commune with ghosts. Ghosts never remember much about their deaths, but Constance might remember something about her life that would help crack the case. But Brynn hasn't used her powers since her husband died and isn't even sure she still can. Brynn will just have to hope that her aunts' magic and her own investigative skills will lead her to answers - and maybe back to the gift she once thought herself ready to give up forever.

I've had a November run of bad luck with the recent books I tried reading, after a year of mostly stellar selections. After abandoning two extremely long Audible books halfway through, which is hard to do, I tried this one. It was better, but mostly disappointed me until the last third of the book, when it peaked my interest much more. The main character, Brynn, seemed like a young girl most of the time, were it not for the constant reference to her husband's death. The issue of sorrow over losing someone resonates a great deal with me, but wasn't really what I was looking for to escape at this time, to escape into a book and away from reality. I didn't like the other aunts at all, especially Nora. I feel the narration detracted, rather than enhanced the story. But the story did pick up. I feel my lack of enthusiasm is on my shoulders, not the fault of the author, of course. It definitely does not fit easily into the cozy murder mystery category. So many reviews say it is light, but not to me.

Disappointing, but last third more intriguing

A really fun and cozy book, perfect for the fall reader who’d like something a little witchy and maybe gently mysterious but not scary. I really enjoyed the cadence of the narrator; it was relaxing and enjoyable to listen to. Recommended!

Worth a credit

While I do have a few criticisms, this book was an absolute joy - cozy magical fantasy with strong multi-generational women as nearly the entire main cast of characters!

Set in an idyllic New England village, you get fall vibes from the start. The Warren women own the town B&B but they have a secret.

The story focuses mainly on Brynn, a young widow still dealing with grief and its impact on her life. But the plot is much farther-reaching and encompasses all of the town. There is a murder mystery to solve - but the book isn’t really a traditional murder mystery. The mystery encompasses more than just the murder, and by the end of the story we know so much more about everyone and the town.

My criticisms are around pacing and loose ends. About 75% into the book I found that the pacing was dragging right as the action was ramping up - this felt weird to me. I was interested, but felt the writing needed retooling to maintain the energy of the first half.

And while I loved the conclusion to the story, as it became clear we were getting to the end I found myself asking “but what about …” regarding a couple of situations and characters. I don’t know if that will be addressed in the sequel - but to be very clear I will be jumping into the sequel soon!

Overall I loved this story from start to finish - it was a perfect cozy story with great characters in a setting I loved diving into and can’t wait to explore more.
