About this listen

Brother Rudyard Kipling sets this fictional Masonic tale during World War I. A wealthy shop-keeper is running a Masonic lodge for traveling brothers from around the globe, most of whom are in and out of London, due to the war. Many can't be authenticated as Masons, but are permitted to sit in lodge, based on partial examinations and an overall gut feeling. The topic of what Grand Lodge would think about this comes up as an eventual conversation.

This short story takes place in 1917 in London. In summary the narrator meets a fellow Freemason, a London tobacconist, who takes him to a Lodge run by a group of wealthy merchants. This lodge has opened their stated communications to soldiers on leave, or recovering from wounds, who can demonstrate their Masonic ‘credentials’. The examiners are very liberal in their examinations and I had the impression that these were men who were all dues paying Master Masons at one time but some may have stopped paying dues and/or become inactive in the interim. The lodge appears to have violated the letter of the law of its grand lodge but to its credit it has preserved the true spirit of 'the Craft' brotherly love. I believe this audiobook will be appreciated by any Brother Master Mason who loves the ideals of our fraternity.
