About this listen

First published in 1869, Little Women is the story of four sisters growing up against the background of the American Civil War. Alcott wrote the book at the urging of the publisher, Thomas Niles, who was seeking a story about girls that would have popular appeal. Although it was commenced essentially as a children's book, it developed into something of a bildungsroman, which touches on more serious issues such as the difficulties faced by single-parent families, the death of a sibling, and fractured relationships.

The book was an immediate success at publication and has become a classic of young adult fiction. It has been adapted numerous times for presentation both on stage and on film.

Presented by the Online Stage. Narration by Lee Ann Howlett. Also featuring the voices of Amanda Friday, PJ Morgan, Tiffany Halla Colonna, Becca Maggie, Elizabeth Klett, Andy Harrington, Ron Altman, Ben Lindsey-Clark, Glenn Hascall, Nancy German, Maureen Boutilier, Jeff Moon, Jennifer Fournier, Miranda Hodges, Izzy Lindsey-Clark, Rebecca Thomas, Brett Downey, Sarah Hulslander, Chris Marcellus, Leanne Yau, Cate Barratt, Libby Stephenson, Marty Krz, and David Prickett. Audio edited by Elizabeth Klett and Michele Eaton.

An excellent tribute to a classic tale.

What can be said that has not already been said about Louisa May Alcott's classic, Little Women? This novel is a wonderful journey back in time and never ceases to be engaging with it's compilation of quiry story lines and timeless characters who begin to feel more like a part of the reader's life than a fictional element of a novel.

With that in mind, the focus of this review will be on the narrators. In over ten years of heavy consumption of audio books (around two novels per week) I have never encountered a production such as this. It truly sounds more like a play than an audio book with multiple different narrators. Each narrator is talented and hard working and the result is a cohesive and perfectly paced rendition of this classic story. The volume is consistent no matter who's narrating and they all do a fantastic job bringing these characters to life....a fantastic tribute to little women.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. The fact that I was gifted this book had no influence over my opinion of it.

My Favorite Book of All Times

I got this story via audiobook boom and this is my voluntary review. I have read this book many times as well as the others that came along with it. If you have not listened to or read the entire series you have missed a treat. This one had some missteps in the narration but overall did the story great justice.

A new experience

The anachronism is charming. I’d never actually read this book when I was younger even though this would have been a typical read for me. It was presented almost like a stage production, with different actors for different voices and a Narrator. I didn’t particularly care for Amy’s voice (for my taste, she sounded somewhat pathetic but I could easily see someone having a different experience) But this did not detract from the loveliness of this Audible book. I thoroughly enjoyed and it provided many evenings of something pleasant to which I could look forward.

A Memorable Performance

I had never read Little Women and was initially afraid that listening to it with a cast would be disjointed and difficult to follow.
However, after the first few minutes of listening to this performance, I was quickly able to recognize each character by the voice of their respective actress/actor. Everyone involved performed their roles superbly, bringing to life their character in a way that made the story emotional and more rewarding. I doubt that a single narrator would have been as successful. In addition, I was especially impressed at how smoothly the verbal exchanges between the characters and with the narrator were accomplished. I greatly enjoyed this recording and most highly recommend it.

A Masterful Rendition of a Much Loved Classic

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
The production of this version of "Little Women" is truly masterful and enjoyable. As one of my favorite books and authors I did expect to enjoy the audiobook already, but not to this extent. The only reason I didn't give a 5 start performance rate, is that at the beginning of the second part of this audiobook, there were long pauses after some of the sentences which were a little annoying. If the audiobook continued throughout with this problem I don't think I would have been able to finish listening to it. However after a few minutes, the narration went back to the usual pace and made it very enjoyable again.
Great job!

Little Women
: Louisa May Alcott

A beautiful classic that never grows old. Here's to Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy for taking us back in time.

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. Lee Ann Howlett, Amanda Friday, P. J. Morgan, Tiffany Halla Colonna, Becca Maggie, Elizabeth Klett, Andy Harrington did this as if a stage or radio play.

Little Women

I never had the opportunity to read this classic. An audiobook was the perfect way to experience it. There was one section in the audio where there were some long pauses that didn’t seem to fit, but that didn’t last. Overall, a very enjoyable performance.

Not this recording

Little Women is a classic but the performance sounds almost like it’s digitized. Pick a different performance!
