About this listen

When the dashing Jack Carstares is unfairly accused of cheating at cards, he leaves the country in disgrace. Returning some years later disguised as a highwayman, his reappearance heralds a dramatic chain of events that includes a Duke, a damsel, a duel, and not one, but two kidnappings. Written when she was just 17, The Black Moth was Heyer’s first novel, but it bears many of the hallmarks of her later romances, being vivid, witty, and peppered with historical insight.

One of the best narrators ever!

Julian Rhind-Tutt is on a whole new level of narrating! I've never had the characters leap out at me like this before. He puts such life and feeling into them! It was a pleasure to listen to him from start to finish. The story was, of course, likewise good. A good introduction into the Devil (not Lucifer, it's a nickname for one of the characters). He's easily one of my favorite characters in all the Heyer books, despite him being a bad guy.

A great story with wonderful narration

I had read The Black Moth a few years ago and fully enjoyed it. The second time through with the Audible version was even better. The narrator was excellent and added further to my appreciation of Ms. Heyer’s writing. She is known for doing extensive research for her books. It is amazing that she wrote this first book, when she was about 19 years old to entertain her brother when he was ill. Her thorough understanding of the Georgian period is evident throughout the story and leads the reader to feel immersed in the era. (Most of her books are set in the Regency era, though a few besides this one are from an earlier time.)
I must mention the narration again. Mr. Rhind-Tutt did an amazing job of capturing the various personalities and portraying the range of emotions. I plan to look for others books he has narrated.
I hope that you enjoy this audiobook as much as I. If this is your first book by Georgette Heyer, welcome to an amazing new author.

No one could have read this story more brilliantly. This performance is one I can listen to time and time again because he made each character so unique and interesting. Loved it!

Enchanting! Delightful!

This is my first Heyer novel and it won't be my last! First and foremost Heyer's use of the English language is enchanting. The narrative is witty, clever and flows beautifully. Each character is distinct and well developed..and there are many of them. I even fell in love in love with the big hearted mare named Jenny. Julian is a masterful narrator, my only quibble -- some of his female voices sound too much like elderly ladies not women in their twenties.

Another great narration!

Georgette Heyer’s books are such a pleasure and a wonderful balance of good storytelling, a quirky cast and a generous sprinkling of humor.
Julian Rhind-Tutt was an excellent choice for narrator for the audio version. His engagement with the text, clever characterization of so many characters, elegant pacing and clever phrasing is a credit to him and to Heyer’s story. Highly recommend.

My Favorite Georgette Heyer Book

I love all of Georgette Heyer's books but I think the Black Moth is the best. A beautiful story about honor and loyalty with a touch of adventure.

Narration problems, minor but annoying

The narrator who has a very nice voice when speaking men's parts and narrative, tends to screech as he attempts to portray Lavinia. That makes her seem a shrew, fatuous and grasping. She is all these things, but the voice need not grate so on the listener's ears.

WONDERFUL!! I recommend 100%!!

This is THE best narrated story by Heyer. This story has everything from action to drama, romance , angst, comedy , tragedy and the best charachters ever.
I only need to request that the narrator do a voice over for these old shades, then everything would be complete!!!!
