About this listen

Joel Gion's memoir tells the story of the first ten years of the Brian Jonestown Massacre.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre are one of the great contemporary cult American rock and roll bands. At the peak of their anarchic reign in the San Francisco underground of the late '90s their psychedelic output was almost as prodigious and impressive as their narcotic intake.

Immortalized in one of the most unforgettable rock and roll documentaries of all time, DIG!, alongside their friends/rivals/nemeses, The Dandy Warhol's, in their early years when the US were obsessed with grunge, the BJM felt like a '60s anachronism.

But with albums like Their Satanic Majesties Second Request and Thank God for Mental Illness, and incendiary, often chaotic, live shows, they burnished their legend as true believers and custodians of the original west coast flame; a privilege and responsibility which continues to this day when the band have a bigger and more dedicated audience than ever. Joel Gion's memoir tells the story of the first ten years of the band from the Duke Seat.

A righteous account of the hazards and pleasures of life on and off the road, In the Jingle Jangle Jungle takes use behind the scenes of the supposed behind the scenes film that cemented the band's legend.

Funny as hell, shot through with the innocence and wonder of a 'percussionist' whose true role is that of the band's 'spirit animal', In the Jingle Jangle Jungle is destined to take its place alongside minor cult classics in the pantheon of rock and roll literature.

Critic reviews

"I shot the perfect bootleg video of Joel with the BJM once: he's menacing but perfectly in the pocket with his tambourine and I just couldn't turn away. Damnit, now he's got me glued to these pages in a similar way...I think my brother knows how to feel." ―Kurt Vile

"Tales told through the prism of San Franciscian subterranean psychescenster Joel Gion. Casted into the fray via the vanguard of an embryonic yet already near mythical BJM brethren, bubbling up from faded Victorian grandeur bedsit land streets, as a new youth guitar scene thus unravels into existence. Surely genuine psychedelia's last stand." ―Sam Knee

"A new postmodern Beat sensation. Gion steers us through the hedonism and headaches of the BJM's alternative America with spontaneous-prose sincerity, ecstatic warmth and a Brautiganesque eye for the absurd. Love it." ―Richard Milward

"Candid, insightful, and by turns both hilarious and regretful... Engaging, unique and endlessly quotable, In the Jingle Jangle Jungle is a must-read for fans of turn-of-the-millennium psychedelic rock 'n' roll." ―Shindig!

"peppered with breezy humour...it expos[es] the uglier side to life in a struggling rock band." —The Telegraph

"In the Jingle Jangle Jungle moves with the same effortless, swaggering storytelling verve that will be so familiar to fans of the cosmic counter-culture of west coast America." —The Bookseller

Masterpiece

An unexpected serious work of art. Insightful, compelling and leaving you wanting more. I am a fan of Joel and the BJM. Joel had the balls to live the true rock and roll lifestyle. The end was moving. Joel if you happen to read this review, please keep writing. You are a very talented writer and narrator, And of course musician. I was on the edge of my seat wanting more more and more. Well I will start my next pass through starting tomorrow. Read it in three days. Inspiring stuff. The book is turning keys giving me ideas, I hope to see you and Anton again at more shows. The book is part how to be a rock star, and how to be a cool and good human. Can’t recommend it enough. Thank you.

What A Ride!

Joel does a great job with the narration of this wild ride. It’s great to hear the origin story of the tambourine man so many have come to know. I don’t want to spoil anything so just buy the ticket and take the ride.

Dig it!!

Joel had me laughing out loud throughout this book. The added bonus is he reads it himself, so you hear it in his voice. I will definitely be reading more of his work! Waiting for his second book now.

Exemplary work!!

Funny and entertaining!! I played a gig at Cafe DuNord opening up for the Diletanttantes. Joel was sound checking. I should have said hi.

Joel is funny as heck and the tones for people’s voices were a crack up.

Stoked on this book. Met Joel once in San Jose where he played with his primary colors band. He was very nice and down to earth. This book was great. I chuckled at the jabs at BRMC even though I dig them too.

A tale weaved by a wonderful tale weaver

Charming, engaging, deep & dark with hints of sunshine just beyond the crest of a dingy San Francisco warehouse. Joel’s wordplay, cadence, and psychedelic paint splash recollections of a happenstanced music life circa when it really mattered, is entrancing in its every detail.

This book totally sucks

A totally pretentious waste of time…. Awful writing…. Truly an unbearable book…. Use credits for something worth your time
