Mixed bag

In the Mix provides a general look into each of the large variety of topics needed for this field. If you're a non-DJ considering such a book, this review is advice in how to approach this book.

Firstly, you may want to listen to the entire book once to get a feel of it. The organization needs improvement. For example, some of what you hear early on is info you won't need until later, so listening to the whole book will let you what to come back to in subsequent listens. Fortunately since it's less than 2 hours and is divided into chapters, it should be easy to revisit some or all of it later per your personal needs.

The author, Swindali, is a successful club DJ and as such his advice comes from that world. This is where most DJs want to be. It's the fun part of the job for most people. However, the profitable side for many DJs is the less glamorous weddings and corporate gigs. Little is said here about these presumably because it's not a huge part of Swindali's interests. For budding DJs though, it's worth finding supplemental information about that side of the industry. This is often what will finance the better, but less profitable, jobs early on.

Much to the author's credit, he is clear that many early gigs will be for fun and experience, not for money. Also to the author's credit, he tells you in this book the secret to increasing your stature and success as a beginner. Think of your favorite big-time DJ of producer. You are not him/her and s/he didn't get there without support. In the Mix emphasizes building your brand, self-promoting, and how to get along in the industry so you can get out of the fly weight class.

Ultimately, will this book help you become a DJ? Impossible to say. Novices starting with no knowledge might benefit most. I'd hesitate to recommend it to others but anyone might find some worthwhile advice among the industry and career related information.
