Great Beginner Guide

I have been in and out of wanting to produce my own music for years, from messing around with outdated janky software like techno EJ 2 decades ago to audacity and garage band. I haven't really found the mindset to sit down and learn a DAW that will allow me to succeed. This is a great crash course into what it takes to become a music producer. I am self-taught on guitar and think I am a good singer, so I figured this would push me in the right direction. I know that to be successful, it really just takes putting in the work, and this has given me a LOT to think about in terms of whether or not I really want to produce my own music or if I am fine just jamming alone on my guitar. The information is well put together and is great for beginners. It's well worth listening if you think you want to produce music and know that you and you alone determine your success.

Spot on.

If you’re a beginner or intermediate level musician - definitely take the hour or so to listen to this. Then listen again and take notes, writing down the details of the stuff you want to execute. This book goes over some great stuff, gives you some hacks, and just really gives it to you straight. Everything he says is, in my opinion, totally correct and important to know. He also gives some real-world advice about the industry that people won’t usually divulge.

Ive been on the industry for 15 years and although i know about all the technical info he touches there were a lot of things he said that made me look at stuff a different way. I love a new perspective i hadn’t previously considered. I do wish there was a longer version of this or if he taught a class, I’d definitely enroll. He’s the kind of guy whose brain id love to just keep picking.

The only note I have is - when it comes to interfaces, go to a website like sweetwater, AMS, or zounds- and spend a little more on an UA Apollo. I think he should’ve mentioned both those sales outlets (which let you pay in 3-6 payments without credit check), and the table top Universal Audio Interfaces, along with why/how/if using plug-ins pre-daw is helpful.

Anyway, get this, you’ll like it no matter what your level of expertise.

To the point!

I’m very impressed with this title, as it does exactly what it says on the tin, without the unnecessary fluff and tons of theory. The author expertly draws on his own wealth of experience on how to start producing music, create excellent albums and provide super quality product on low budget. The most important piece advice for me was how to find your own style and what to do when you’re not sure what kind of music you want to produce, how to learn from others, accept feedback and be open to accepting change. Cole is really helpful giving you tips on how to start on your own, which pieces of hardware purchase, where to find clients and how to become an artist yourself. Each chapter has a short summary and review for you to use to asses yourself, see where you are, and then move on to the next one.

Invaluable amount of knowledge and value condensed into a very short audiobook, it’s truly impressive! Would definitely recommend to any aspiring young musician, wannabe producer.

Top mixing and recording crash course

I started out in 2004 recording on an old tape 4-track. Those were the days! It was a nightmare trying to get multiple instruments overlapped with so little to work with. I ended up giving a production a break (sadly). This audiobook was exactly what I needed to kickstart my passion - I’m back in the game with up to date knowledge! This really helped me level up my recording and mixing to heights I would have believed before. Especially recording hip hop. Thank you to the author!!

One of the most likable and useful books for computer musicians

Compare this with Ari’s Take—yes, it’s smart, but is the size of Moby Dick and mostly recommends fairly expensive gear. This will give you easy to follow advice to improve your craft first. You’ll narrow down your to-do list and proceed with confidence.

Some amazing advice

I listened to this as a bit of a primer, and I was pleased to find it’s chock full of great ideas. And step-by-step action plans, which is really cool. It’s also really well-narrated. Would recommend!
