Publisher's summary

Carolyn Haines's Independent Bones is the next novel in the series that Kirkus Reviews characterizes as “Stephanie Plum meets the Ya-Ya Sisterhood” featuring sassy Southern private investigator Sarah Booth Delaney.

When Dr. Alala Diakos, a visiting professor of Greek literature, comes to teach at Ole Miss in Oxford, Mississippi, it doesn't take long for controversy to follow. With her fervent feminist ideals and revolutionary leanings, she quickly earns the admiration of many - and the ire of others. During a speech in the park, in which Alala tries to organize the women of Zinnia to demand equal pay, the crowd gets unruly, with men heckling the professor. And when PI Sarah Booth Delaney finds a sniper rifle and scope in the bushes, she begins to worry that there are more than fighting words at stake.

Sarah Booth calls her boyfriend, Sheriff Coleman Peters, who offers the protection of the Zinnia police department, but Alala rejects him, saying she has no use for the law or men. And when a notorious domestic abuser is found dead the next day, suspicions turn to Alala herself, who was overheard bragging that she would take him down. Tensions deepen when connections are drawn between Alala and two similar, previous deaths.

But Sarah Booth doesn't want to believe Alala is a murderer, and when the professor shows up at Sarah Booth’s doorstep, asking her to find the real criminal, Sarah Booth embarks on a case stretching across the Delta. Yet Alala remains at the center of it all, and Sarah Booth can’t help but wonder if the killer has been with her all along....

Another delight from Carolyn Haines

Loved it. Carolyn Haines is an amazing storyteller. Her characters are wonderful and are old friends now. When you add Kate Forbes's narration, it's is total perfection.

Another Great Adventure

I absolutely love this series, and this newest book did not disappoint! I always get so into the story that I often can't turn it off. I just have to know what's next. May have to switch back to the old fashion hard backs! I've gotten the last 2 or 3 on audio book, and usually end up finishing in a day, maybe 2. The books take just a day or 2 more. 🤣🤣 I'm always sad when it ends though! Keep them coming! Please!!

The best part was the “arrival”

Once again, the narrator mixes up some voices, but this book isn’t as bad as the last two or three (as related to voices). It seems the author has forgotten that some times the story can just be a murder mystery. The politics and social “justice” parts of the plot are gratuitous and unnecessary. She just needs to get back her craft and not accuse all of us the drive a big pickup of being racism and sexist. Btw, I’m a female big pickup driver.

What is wrong with these authors?

I have always loved this series! It was a fun, delightful escape when I wanted something lighthearted. So, what in the world is this author thinking? I am so tired of the “woke“, elitism nonsense.
Examples: Guns:
According to the author, anyone who owns a gun is an abusive, uneducated, 2nd amendment loving violent moron. Except of course, for the main character and her partner who are always “packing heat”. And as one line in the book states, “you know Tinky would shoot anybody that bothered her!“ Huh?
Violence: it’s OK if it’s perpetrated by the main character or her partner, or someone she likes and/or approves of. In one scene her dog Sweetie Pie knocks down a business owner with whom they are arguing- and yes, no question- the character is a complete jerk. Fine. Some of those are needed in every story. However, don’t rail against violence perpetrated by some, and have your characters stand by and allow this man’s employee to kick him multiple times while he’s laying on the ground unconscious. This is the kind of stuff that gives those very few of us decent Democrats left in this country a bad name. I can get this “okay for me, but not thee” nonsense on every news channel out there. I don’t want it in my cozy mysteries.

What a total disappointment! Another clearly leftist Author!

The Story was boring and filled with the leftist concepts of misogyny vs the Woman’s lib group. It’s such a failure as an interesting story that I stopped after 5 chapters.

I will take this author off my reading list.
