About this listen

In a world that seems so troubled, how do we hold on to hope?

This program is read by the authors and includes a bonus PDF.

Looking at the headlines—the worsening climate crisis, a global pandemic, loss of biodiversity, political upheaval—it can be hard to feel optimistic. And yet hope has never been more desperately needed.

In this urgent audiobook, Jane Goodall, the world's most famous living naturalist, and Douglas Abrams, the internationally bestselling co-author of The Book of Joy, explore through intimate and thought-provoking dialogue one of the most sought after and least understood elements of human nature: hope. In The Book of Hope, Jane focuses on her "Four Reasons for Hope": The Amazing Human Intellect, The Resilience of Nature, The Power of Young People, and The Indomitable Human Spirit.

Drawing on decades of work that has helped expand our understanding of what it means to be human and what we all need to do to help build a better world, The Book of Hope touches on vital questions, including: How do we stay hopeful when everything seems hopeless? How do we cultivate hope in our children? What is the relationship between hope and action? Filled with moving and inspirational stories and photographs from Jane’s remarkable career, The Book of Hope is a deeply personal conversation with one of the most beloved figures in the world today.

While discussing the experiences that shaped her discoveries and beliefs, Jane tells the story of how she became a messenger of hope, from living through World War II to her years in Gombe to realizing she had to leave the forest to travel the world in her role as an advocate for environmental justice. And for the first time, she shares her profound revelations about her next, and perhaps final, adventure.

The second audiobook in the Global Icons Series—which launched with the instant classic The Book of Joy with His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu—The Book of Hope is a rare and intimate look not only at the nature of hope but also into the heart and mind of a woman who revolutionized how we view the world around us and has spent a lifetime fighting for our future.

There is still hope, and this audiobook will help guide us to it.

PURE WISDOM!

This is the first of Jane’s books I have read. I had seen many photos of her in the past and read a few articles about her, but I largely knew her as the chimp lady. Given her lifelong experience as a naturalist and global leader, I expected the book to be much more about Jane’s experience with chimps. And boy is it! Jane is an incredibly deep, thoughtful, inspiring soul who is a model for how to live one’s life to the fullest. She has done this with the utmost grace, while dealing with more than her fair share of challenges and tragedy. The book is, as the title reveals, about hope. It has a simple message covering Jane’s four reasons why she is hopeful, which is supported with many anecdotes and facts. This book is uplifting, I will surely be using it as a go to when feeling down about the state of our world.

Great Dialog of Hope

Jane is a champion for a healthy world and great story teller. Abrams brought much poignancy to the message. I think this book should be required in school. Inspiring people to be an advocate for saving our planet. We are all connected.

remarkable

What a remarkable human being Jane Goodall is! I truly enjoyed the format in which the book was presented. As a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother I worry about our beautiful planet. I am thankful for the hope that Jane Goodall presents for us and overwhelmed at her vast contributions to all persons and animals on our earth. Thank you! I will be listening to this book again. I highly recommend it for all.

I wasn't a fan of hope before reading this book

In all honesty, hope used to be a word that really bothered me.
After listening to this book, I have an entirely different perspective of hope, and I'm willing to recognize where hope lives in me and to hold onto hope from a new perspective.
I cried several times throughout this book because of my new and deeper understanding of that word.
I'm so grateful to Jane and Douglas for creating this book.

Good stories but...

I really liked most parts of the book, but the way it is read is like a scripted podcast which is boring for both sides. I live audio books but this one was not for me.

The Genuine thoughts and feelings about all living things and the interconnectedness!

It was so heartfelt listening to Jane’s own voice. You could hear her depth and understanding. Seldom do you find someone so dedicated to animals, plants, trees, and humans. I can’t imagine anyone listening to this book would not respond with action. Truly a gift of gratitude and appreciation to our current chaotic world. Well done Jane and Doug! ♥️ Cheri

Amazing narration

I love Jane Goodall and, during these increasingly difficult times, was looking for something to give me hope. I don't even remember how I found this book as I had never heard of it before scrolling through Audible. It made me laugh and cry and so much more. I typically only stick to works of fiction, but after reading (listening to) this, I am willing to branch out more. The fact that it was narrated by the authors made it even more special. I felt very connected to them almost as if I was a part of their conversation. Please listen to this book!
