Publisher's summary
""Steal-your-breath adventure."" —Marissa Meyer, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Lunar Chronicles
Perfect for fans of Fable and House of Salt and Sorrows, this spectacular YA fantasy adventure debut is like nothing else, featuring a unique twist on Treasure Island, a magnetic second chance romance, and a thrilling heist where the reward is great—but the risks are even greater.
In the slowly sinking city of Coconino, Arizona, the days are long, the money is tight, and the rain never stops.
For Jin Haldar, this life is nothing new—ever since her father died in a diving accident, she’s barely made ends meet for her and her younger sister, Thara.
Enter Bhili: a drifter who offers Jin and Thara the score of a lifetime—a massive stash of gold hidden in the sunken ruins of Las Vegas.
Jin knows it’s too dangerous. She stopped diving after her father’s accident. But when her sister decides to go, Jin’s left with only one choice: to go with her.
A ragtag crew is assembled—including Jin’s annoyingly hot ex-boyfriend. From there, a high-stakes heist ensues that’s beyond even Jin’s wildest fears. Crumbling ruins, sea beasts, corsairs, and a mysterious figure named João Silva all lie in wait. To survive, Jin will have to do what she promised herself she’d never do again: dive.

Story
In rural Caball Hollow, surrounded by the vast National Forest, the James women serve up more than fried green tomatoes at the Harvest Moon diner, where the family recipes are not the only secrets. Like her sisters, Linden was born with an unusual ability. She can taste what others are feeling, but this so-called gift soured her relationship with the vexingly attractive Cole Spencer one fateful night a year ago . . . A night when Linden vanished into the depths of the Forest and returned with no memories of what happened, just a litany of questions.

Fun, fast paced and exciting. Wonderful read for any age!
Read this alongside my 4th grade daughter as part of our “book club” and we both loved it. It’s a fast, super tightly written book, and a great example of the genre. There’s tantalizing hints and world building but you never get bogged down in it. The characters are vivid and come to life quickly, and the main characters arc is perfect. I do imagine most people will miss some of the world building as to why the earth is drowned and just assume is a generic climate change dystopia, but that’s fine as it doesn’t hurt your enjoyment at all.
Really fun, highly recommended!

Boring
This book is more about family drama than actual diving or exploring, which is what I wanted to read. We only see real exploring during the tail-end of the book and even that is hampered by conflict.
