Story
Almost every religion, spiritual practice, philosophy and person grapples with fear. The most repeated phrase in the Bible is “Be not afraid.” The ancient Greeks spoke of phobos, panic and terror. It is natural to feel fear, the Stoics believed, but it cannot rule you. Courage, then, is the ability to rise above fear, to do what’s right, to do what’s needed, to do what is true. And so it rests at the heart of the works of Marcus Aurelius, Aristotle, and CS Lewis, alongside temperance, justice, and wisdom.

Story
Some people bounce back in response to setbacks; others break. We often think that these responses are hardwired, but fortunately this is not the case. Stoicism offers us an alternative approach. Plumbing the wisdom of one of the most popular and successful schools of thought from ancient Rome, philosopher William B. Irvine teaches us to turn any challenge on its head. The Stoic Challenge, then, is the ultimate guide to improving your quality of life through tactics developed by ancient Stoics, from Marcus Aurelius and Seneca to Epictetus.

Where can you find joy? Gain strength? How should we face our fears? Deal with the death of a loved one? And what about those reoccurring depressing thoughts? While traditional schooling doesn’t address such questions, it’s exactly what ancient schools of philosophy were all about: They taught you how to live. Even though these schools don’t exist anymore, you and I and most people are in as much need of a philosophy that guides us through life as we ever were. This compelling, highly actionable guide shows you how to deal more effectively with whatever life throws at you.

The Easiest way to understand Stoicism
I have many books on stoicism, and I feel the explanation and lessons take too long and are extremely hard to help you grab the concept. Not with this book! This one is short, straight to the point, and opens the mind with just enough information to help navigate the journey. After listening, I can continue learning from others, offering deeper detail.
All the best on your adventures learning this. It will transform your life. Sidow Sobrino.

Computers still suck at reading
I thought the content was laid out well and found the content to be helpful. However, the distraction of having every dash announced and the mispronunciation of words that have the same spelling but deferent pronunciation according to placement within sentence structure and their meaning is very distracting.

Dislike the reader
It sounded like a computer was reading it. It did pronounce the words right. It was a huge distraction hearing the different pronunciations of the name Marcus Aurelius.

Listen with Care
I received a free review copy of this audiobook.
As a summary of how stoicism works, I think this is an okay book.
As a self-help guide, I think this is probably a good book.
Why the low stars?
Because mixed with the practical advice is an insidiously wrong way of looking at the world I dare not recommend to anyone. Do not swallow anything in this book whole: take small, discerning bites.
