About this listen

High Ambo, in England, is the setting. It is winter, and Caroline West - a very human, placid, and unexcitable person - has gone there to escape her late husband's relatives. Like so many good-hearted people, she is immediately put upon. Caroline's sister Iris comes first, full of impulse and determination to be a reporter - an ambition abruptly deflected by a handsome young schoolmaster - an authority on birds. Then comes Robert, with his sweet, ingenuous fiancée Polly, and thus making the three-ring circus of a genuine Cadell household. A great number of little boys with big ears and caps are supporting players - English private school variety.

Altogether, this audiobook is in the happiest tradition of the English social comedy, and those who want to find as much life and laughter as possible will enjoy listening to it.

The bird watching schoolmaster and Iris... in winter. A beautiful English country story set in post-war England, published in 1949. Interesting in that it gives insights into the rationing system that was still in use.
Beautiful scenery, fun characters, delightful dialogue.
A special mention must be made of the new narrator. In short - she's wonderful. I can't fault her and am crossing my fingers that she works on more Elizabeth Cadell books. Her calm, clear voice is just right for these very special books! Kudos to her for the fantastic job she did with Iris in Winter.

Oh my! It's so romantic!

Where does Iris in Winter rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I would say in the top 10.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Iris in Winter?

I loved the part where the professor of music asked Caroline to sing and she sounded like an angel and the professor demanded that she return to her singing career. It was very sweet.

What about Alexandra Reynolds’s performance did you like?

She was perfectly amazing! I love the British accent and she voiced all of the characters perfectly. She put me there in the story. I felt like I could close my eyes and be there.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I could not put it down. Loved the story, loved the characters. The old man who kept coming and stealing stuff should have been charged with theft, lol. But other than that, I really liked the bird watching professor and Iris.

Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed this narrator, the great granddaughter of Elizabeth Cadell. She is a professional and I hope she is kind enough to narrate many more of her books. Thank you Alexandra for your time in doing this project. Looking forward to more!

Excellent story, loved this one!!!

Don't miss this story OR the wonderful narration!

Delightful!

Lighthearted, gentle, romantic comedy set in 1950s England; excellent narration by author's great-granddaughter.
Schoolboy and his friends are delightful and funny, although minor characters. Young fiancée Polly is equally delightful and funny, and most unusual, and has a larger role.
Although these are men and women who conform to the time period in which they were written, and not to modern sensibilities, the characters' emotions are easily relatable and enjoyable.

Lighthearted

Normally I am a big fan of Elizabeth Cadell but this story was dumb and the narrator
(the grand daughter of the author) was awful...the story was almost incoherent ...I am used to the sometimes zany characters of Cadell but this was too much.
Maybe it was just meant to be read not listened to! I also purchased "The Lark Shall Sing "; with a different narrator so I hope will be a better listening experience .

Terrible Narrator
