Publisher's summary

Growing up in rural Mississippi just a couple of miles from the Mississippi River, white eight-year-old boy Buddy spends his summers playing in the woods behind his neighborhood. The day Buddy spots a wounded deer in those woods, he is wholly unprepared for a chance meeting with a stranger who will shape the course of his life.

Jake - an older African-American fisherman, ex-convict, former tent preacher - and Buddy form an unlikely bond that transcends age and race. Forged by their many conversations about life and faith, their friendship endures sorrows, celebrations, and transitions, ultimately revealing the power to heal them both.

Heartwarming and full of emotion

Deeply engaging coming-of-age in rural Mississippi. Deals with so much of life, struggle, meaning, purpose, and the age-old question of why there is evil and sorrow in the world. The narration really compliments the story. I appreciate a glimpse into Mississippi, into the Episcopal church, and the value of a wise mentor to a child.

A Great Read

The book is one long sermon. Worth every word. Jake's word are special. A story that brings the love of Jesus a little closer to each of us.

sweet story

this was a great story...a few sections where the details dragged on too long.

Highly, highly recommend.

This novel has a strong storyline, but what draws me to it is the layers and layers of insights and wisdom. I loved listening to the narrator’s telling of the audible version. Now I want to buy the actual book so I can underline and reflect on its content.

Amazing story—masterful narration

A wonderful story made all the more wonderful as a chronology of racial progress made, even in Mississippi, over the last 50 years. I’m sure the print copy would be very entertaining, but the narration is an outstanding addition to the power of the story.

Hard to put down

Excellent book, especially for a southerner or someone who wants a good, down-home view of “religion”. The story kept me intrigued from beginning to end. It made me laugh and it brought tears to my eyes. I found it hard to put down and couldn’t wait to get the sequel (Beulah).

A warm and endearing story.

Such a dear book and I have so enjoyed the narrator’s voice and dialect. A must read! For every year!
