About this listen

Private Jake Elliott was apprehensive as he walked to the commander’s office. He couldn’t think of a single transgression that would have attracted the major’s attention.

When he left the command building 10 minutes later, he was still numbed by the short visit. Tomorrow, he would no longer be a cavalryman, but would be returning to the family ranch outside of Fort Benton in Montana Territory.

But it was the reason he was being discharged before his enlistment expired that had been the biggest shock. His mother had been brutally murdered. If that hadn’t stunned him enough, it was when he learned that his father had committed the crime.

When Jake boarded the riverboat that would take him home, he wasn’t planning to stay on the ranch for more than a few days. He’d soon be leaving to hunt down his father and find justice for his mother.

The love of family.

I’ve enjoyed the books by this author. I’ve always been more a sci-fi/horror reading. But something draw me to CJ Petit’s books. Now I want to read them all.

Jake

This is a mystery western. In this book Jake gets a message that his Father has killed his Mother. He leaves the army and goes home. I won't spoil it but saying to much. There is a great story line. Jake takes over running the ranch. He goes looking for his father because he wants answers. This story is written in a way that holds your attention. There is a good hunt in the hunt for his Father. He comes back and is in the process of starting a life with his girlfriend. Lloyd James does a great job narrating this book. If my review is any help will you please click on the helpful link below. Simply a good page turner.

Good character builds and story telling. CJ has set a pretty high standard and this book is there.

A good story.

I enjoyed this story and the reader. I am also a fan of Montana even though I live in Minnesota.

If I knew how bad it was, I wouldn't of Paid the Credit..
This book from C.J. is not even close to others I've read.

Skip this if you want a good western’

Long on narrative and short on action. This was a slow, boring, predictable love story that was simply set in the old west. This was my third book by Petit. If this has been my first one, I would never have read the other two.

Poorly categorized

This is basically a romantic novel masquerading as a mystery. Also it’s setting is the west of the latter 1800s. The author seems to me not to understand the culture of the west at that time nor type of people who settled it.
