About this listen

Featured title on PBS's The Great American Read in 2018

The orphaned Jane Eyre has emerged a fiercely independent young woman. As governess at Thornfield Hall, she's found her first real home - though it stands in the shadow of the estate's master, Mr. Rochester, and its haunted halls ring with maniacal laughter. For even the grandest houses have secrets.

As much a story about defying convention as it is about coming-of-age, Jane Eyre remains one of the most beloved novels in the English language. Both Gothic and Victorian in its influence and scope, it captures one woman's determination to live life on her own terms - choosing courage over fear, while finding power in love and compassion.

Revised edition: Previously published as Jane Eyre, this edition of Jane Eyre (AmazonClassics Edition) includes editorial revisions.

Jane Eyre was beautiful all the way through. It is now one of my favorites. I listened to the Amazon Classic Edition audiobook on audible and highly recommend it.

I see why this is a classic

There was nothing to dislike… I was in eager anticipation the entire read and never wished that any portion move more quickly so as to get to the next heartening part. Ms Ericksen’s rendition was quite perfect and I felt every emotion as she narrated each sentence. My heart was stirred!

Inspired

Brilliant. Supreme, and sublime. Everything that is to be expected from great, classic literature. Jane Eyre is an inspiration to the modern-21St century woman. The narration is also great. C. Bronte' at her best.

Heroic Inspiration to the 21st-Century Woman!

It had been decades since I read “Jane Eyre.” My enjoyment of this listening experience was near complete. The narrator’s acting was wonderful; she had me alternately laughing and in tears, when appropriate. Because my very long ago reading and my having had only films and TV mini-series as sources of memory, I’d forgotten Jane having discovered cousins and inherited money. And — more important to me— I had absolutely no memory of the book ending on St. John and Jesus, thank goodness. All in all, though, I loved this book and Audible’s presentation of it. Thank you, Audible!

Lovely, with Some Surprises...

The narrator is excellent. She reads with just the right emotion and a very pleasant voice. Highly recommended.

*Listening* to "Jane Eyre" at 67 is so much better than *reading* it at 17. The part in the middle where she mucks about in the wilderness for 3 days without food or money was still as annoying and unbelievable as it was 50 years ago. How foolish is a smart woman showed to be, leaving home without enough cash and then using all of that cach for a carriage ride where she could have said "take me as far as ten shillings will take me" and then still have money for food. But then of course the story would have turned out differently.... or would it?

I have matured since I first HAD to read it

Highly recommend! Totally enjoyed this timeless classic. Faith restored. Humbling. Wish I read this novel when I was a youngster.

Lovely!

The narrator has a perfect voice for this book but sometimes I can't tell when she switches to a different character and I have to go back a minute or two to figure out what is going on.

Wonderful story

Somewhat annoying story (can anyone's life work out so perfectly? ), but the performance was wonderful.

Not Jane Austen

The narration was brilliant and heartfelt. It was as though I was watching a play. The story was intriguing and I so wanted Jane to be with her true Love. The whole performance held me to the end.
