Publisher's summary

When Mrs. Dashwood is forced by an avaricious daughter-in-law to leave the family home in Sussex, she takes her three daughters to live in a modest cottage in Devon. For Elinor, the eldest daughter, the move means a painful separation from the man she loves, but her sister Marianne finds in Devon the romance and excitement which she longs for. The contrasting fortunes and temperaments of the two girls as they struggle to cope in their different ways with the cruel events which fate has in store for them are portrayed by Jane Austen with her usual irony, humour, and profound sensibility.

Outstanding narrator!

Juliet Stevenson's narration of Jane Austen is pitch-perfect! She captures the spirit of prose and voices of the character's flawlessly. The only one of Austen's books not available with her narration is Pride and Prejudice. They need to fix that.

An Austen classic read beautifully

I recommend this audiobook to all Jane Austen fans. This reading is lovely, doing justice to Austen's delicious language, subtle humor, and gentle satire.

Perfect Austen

The reader was wonderful at creating characters with her voice. Jane Austen's words are perfect and funny and so precise. Thoroughly enjoyable.

A high standard for all novels : ).

I truly enjoy Austen's novels and having it read by Ms. Stevenson adds to the enjoyment. If I remember correctly, Ms. Stevenson played Fanny Dashwood in a film version and made you want to hate Fanny forever : ). A great combination to be sure!

Solid audiobook

Have you listened to any of Juliet Stevenson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I chose this audiobook because of my love for Juliet Stevenson's reading of "Middlemarch". Her ability to read the varying characters of the book, and of course her British accent, are a perfect fit. She even does convincing voices for elderly men. I think I would have enjoyed this book more if I had not listened to it immediately following "Middlemarch"- which, if you like this, I would absolutely recommend. In comparison, I felt the characters here were somewhat lacking in the compelling depth of Eliot's novel.

great voices by Narrator bring it to life

Instead of just reading a book, this Narrator has so many different, believable voices that it is easy to lose yourself in the story.

Pure entertainment

I can't get enough of this narrator + Jane Austen. Sense and sensibility is life. Particularly into this one since the "which Jane Austen heroine are you?" quiz told me I was a Marianne Dashwood and without a doubt, I am. Lol enjoy...

Beautiful Narration

Juliet Stevenson brings this book to a gentle life. Always a favorite both she and most Jane Austen books, this version is a quiet lovely escape.

All time favorite.

Austen at her most clever and best. An abundance of well rounded characters and a critical take on the Romantic sentiments of the period make this a masterpiece. And of course, Juliet Stevenson does a fantastic job, though I could not tell Sir John from her Mrs. Jennings at times.
