About this listen

In this moving collection of short stories, James Lee Burke elegantly marries his flair for gripping storytelling with his urbane writing style and complex, fascinating character portraits. The backdrop of the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast proves to be a versatile setting for Burke's stories, which cover the scope of the human experience, from love and sex to domestic abuse, to war and death and friendship.©2007 James Lee Burke. Critic reviews

"Burke demonstrates impressive range, sensitivity and polish in these smaller-scale gems." ( Publisher's Weekly)
"Whether the lead characters are abused children or prostitutes trying to escape the life, Burke always makes us see both the near certainty of tragedy to come and the smoldering embers of possibility in the ashes of blighted lives." ( Booklist)

If ever there was a JLB work that was made for Mark Hammer's narration, this was it!

As far as JLB fans, most I see/hear prefer Will Patton to Mark Hammer, but this collection was absolutely MADE for Hammer. I can't believe they missed the boat on this one!!

However, the reader was good and did not detract from the stories.

I prefer JLB novels to the short stories. The short stories just didn't have the punch I was expecting.

Overall, the collection was a nice change of pace and I recommend!

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

At times the switch between stories was very abrupt

Has Jesus Out to Sea turned you off from other books in this genre?

not at all I love JLB However this particular book felt like a lot of rehash from other books. Having said that I have not read his non NOLA series and am now more interested in those

What didn’t you like about Ron McLarty’s performance?

Ron McLarty is perfect and definitely the voice of Dave Robicheaux

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I felt somewhat disappointed when I discover several stories with strong links and at times identical to other written work. While the back stories went further than what was told in the novel it did not really contribute to my enjoyment of the novels

ok not one of Burke's best
