About this listen

When the Jezebel River overflows her banks and tries to swallow the small town of Gideon in East Texas, Celia Moon is alone and frightened in the farmhouse she inherited from her grandmother. When a mesmerizing and troubled drifter washes up on her porch, she has no choice but to take him in. As the river rises, the pair retreat to the attic to ride out the storm - and discover a compelling attraction.

The daughter of two artists who were besotted with each other, Celia has always felt the odd woman out. She yearns to find a place she can call her own, a family of her own, and a life that has some stability and meaning. Her grandmother's farmhouse in Gideon has always represented that.

Eric fled his grim childhood in Gideon to find a life as an acclaimed blues guitarist, but that life has been taken from him too, and he's back in Gideon with a chip on his shoulder that hides the vast hunger he, too, feels to find his place, his home, his life. Waiting out the storm with sunny, optimistic Celia, he wonders if maybe there's a place in Gideon for him after all, in the arms of a woman who might know more than she thinks about acceptance.

A novel as rich and deep as a river, Jezebel's Blues is both a haunting love story and a tale of finding your way to accepting yourself.

Enjoyed writing

Would you try another book from Ruth Wind and Barbara Samuel and/or Nicole Colburn?

Yes. I have read several of Barbara Samuel's books and I love her writing. I would not listen to another book read by Nicole Coburn

If you’ve listened to books by Ruth Wind and Barbara Samuel before, how does this one compare?

This is the first time I have listened to a book by her

What didn’t you like about Nicole Colburn’s performance?

Horrible!!! If I could give her some pointers, the first thing I would say is please pronounce the letter T in the middle of a sentences. She said buuuons instead of buttons, almost every word in the book that had a T in the middle was pronounced that way. It bugged me so much I couldn't get into the story. There were many other mispronunciations through the book.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The story might have been good, but I couldn't get past the reader.

Buy the book…it’s much better.

I can’t believe that I paid for this reading of Jezebel’s Blues that left out the last 3 chapters! Do yourself a favor — read the book, don’t buy the audible version.

Wait for the revised copy

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

It was well spent all the way until I realize that the best part of the book was missing. I have already contacted the author and she will have the audiobook revised.
I love everything about Barbara Samuel's books the characters are smart, the story line will pull you in and the love is wonderful.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I wouldn't change the story at all. The story is rich with details that are believable and creative. Again the characters are fully formed and makes you feel that they could be real. The characters inspire each other.

What about Nicole Colburn’s performance did you like?

She makes the story feel like the music the story talks about. She give the story a rich and moody atmosphere. You can feel the humidity and the heat from the summer and the river and how the characters fit into the town.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Yes. Samuel's has a great way of telling stories.

Any additional comments?

I have read many of Samuel's stories and they all touch my heart and mind. The characters are strong and smart and the situations are very endearing and sometimes sad.
