About this listen

When a young woman returns to North Carolina after a 30-year absence, she finds that the once grand tobacco plantation she called home holds more secrets than she ever imagined.

Though Peak Plantation has been in her family for generations, Leslie Nichols can't wait to rid herself of the farm left to her by her estranged grandmother Maggie - and with it the disturbing memories of her mother's death, her father's disgrace, and her unhappy childhood. But Leslie isn't the only one with a claim to Peak.

Jay Davenport, Peak's reclusive caretaker, has his own reasons for holding onto the land bequeathed to him by Leslie's grandmother. Before she died, Maggie hinted at a terrible secret surrounding Adele Laveau, a lady's maid who came to Peak during the 1930s and died under mysterious circumstances. Jay is haunted by Maggie's story, yet the truth eludes him - until Leslie uncovers a cryptically marked grave on the property.

As they delve into the mystery of Adele's death, Leslie and Jay discover shocking secrets that extend deep into the roots of Leslie's family tree - secrets that have the power to alter her life forever.

The strength of a women goes beyond comprehension when love is at play. The weakness of some men makes me wonder why the heart is such a strong muscle

Really enjoyed the plot twists in the storyline. I can usually figure them out too soon, but there was one that I didn’t expect. Narrator was really good too.

Enjoyed the story

Warm and interesting story of the 1930's south. Great characterization. Although I found this book a very good read, I feel the story a bit too long with unnecessary conversation and detail.

Touching novel of historical fiction.

This is a story that draws you in. The character of Adele is rich and full of depth. Normally I prefer present day parts of stories, but the telling of Adele’s life in her own “voice” is by far the best here. Definitely worth the read!!

Beautiful & heartbreaking

I like this book very much, but there were several mispronunciations, which took away a bit from the experience.

The story

This listen has some good suspense and surprises and I appreciate the style of writing by this author. As always, I appreciate the pieces of “history” (references to culture, in particular, with this story) in any book of which I read or listen. I hate to be negative…. But the narrators voice is annoying - it doesn’t match the characters (especially the character Leslie) and her phrasing is all wrong. It’s distracting and takes away from the story.

A good listen
