Once upon a time there was a version of our faith that was practically...irresistible. But that was then. Today we preach, teach, write, and communicate as if nothing has changed. As if “The Bible says it” still settles it. It’s time to hit pause on much of what we’re doing and consider the faith modeled by our first-century brothers and sisters who had no official Bible, no status, and humanly speaking, little chance of survival. What did they know that we don’t? What made their faith so compelling, so defensible, so irresistible? Buckle up...you’re about to find out.

Story
Historians know virtually nothing about the two decades following the crucifixion of Jesus, when his followers regrouped and began to spread his message. During this time the man we know as the apostle Paul joined the movement and began to preach to the gentiles. Using the oldest Christian documents that we have - the letters of Paul - as well as other early Christian sources, historian and scholar James Tabor reconstructs the origins of Christianity.

Story
The Council of Nicea was not clerics in a dark and ornate hall. It was brawls in churchyards; it was emperors and governors fighting to save the empire; it was political intrigue as the governments of church and state blended into a volatile stew. It was the way a fringe group of peace-loving communal worshipers of a crucified Palestinian prophet conquered the Roman Empire.

Story
In this highly accessible discussion, Bart Ehrman examines the most recent textual and archaeological sources for the life of Jesus, along with the history of first-century Palestine, drawing a fascinating portrait of the man and his teachings. Ehrman shows us what historians have long known about the Gospels and the man who stands behind them. Through a careful evaluation of the New Testament (and other surviving sources, including the more recently discovered Gospels of Thomas and Peter), Ehrman proposes that Jesus can be best understood as an apocalyptic prophet.

Narrators voice bothered me
Very informative, but the narration left something to be desired. Every “s” or “sh” sound whistled, every “ch” was pronounced the American way, not the Hebrew way (chet). A lot of the Hebrew words were pronounced like he’d never read them & no one informed him that he’d need to read them out loud.

If you need a sleeping aid…
I have tried four times to listen to this book. First the narration is so monotone that I’ve fallen asleep each time!
Also if you are interested in be Jewish, he goes WAY beyond the basics, which would be intimidating to someone thinking about converting.
I happen to BE Jewish and I was confused! Oy vey!

Prounce the dam words right
The book disappointed in scope. Although I like the narrator in general his pronunciation of key words was upsetting. Where was discussion of Renewal Judaism? Or at least a mention. Overall I appreciated the book and appreciated keeping Israeli Palestinian conflict. Out and focusing on both law and beliefs.

Narrator needs some schooling
Here's the thing: When you hire a narrator, make sure they know how to properly pronounce ethnic words. Otherwise, as in this case, your narrator will sound like an idiot and alienate customers. In addition to the tragically misinformed narrator, the contents are extremely shallow without much information.

A Good Start
As a Jew who converted a long time ago, I think this book is a good first outline for someone looking to convert. It definitely didn't go into a lot of detail over the more cultural and ritualistic aspects of Judaism which I feel are pertinent knowledge to new comers. It is by no means (as the author says) a complete accumulation of information but may be helpful to those who know absolutely nothing about Judaism to start. All in all, I think it's an important book if you really are at step one.

It's short and wrong
It gives too much weight to religions that are not judaism. There is no such thing as Messianic judaism. That's just christianity with fashion sense. The narrator horribly pronounces basic holiday names. It's like nails on a chalkboard. Overall, I think this book came from a good place, but it's misguided. And if you're looking for information on the jewish faith, I would look somewhere else.

Too brief
The book is very short, does not cover important subjects. It also adds a category to Judaism that is not Jewish and that’s messianic.
