Publisher's summary

In this poignant, perceptive, witty novel, Gary D. Schmidt brings authenticity and emotion to multiple plot strands, weaving in themes of grief, loss, redemption, achievement, and love. Following the death of her closest friend in summer 1968, Meryl Lee Kowalski goes off to St. Elene's Preparatory Academy for Girls, where she struggles to navigate the venerable boarding school's traditions and a social structure heavily weighted toward students from wealthy backgrounds. In a parallel story, Matt Coffin has wound up on the Maine coast near St. Elene's with a pillowcase full of money lifted from the leader of a criminal gang, fearing the gang's relentless, destructive pursuit. Both young people gradually dispel their loneliness, finding a way to be hopeful and also finding each other.

A tale of accomplishment…

The story was all the emotions rolled into a tale of triumph. The two main characters made me care about them from the start and their stories intertwining keep me wanting to listen at the edge of my seat. Amazing, triumphant, hilarious, and heartbreaking wrapped up in one story. A great continuation to “Wednesday’s Wars.”

Wow - one of the best stories ever told

I’m a 55 year old business executive. My 30 year old daughter recommended this book that was written for a target audience if 10-16 yr olds. My kids and I had read the Wednesday Wars years ago, which is almost required to fully appreciate this book. Schmidt is a master story teller. If this does not become a Newberry nominee, something is seriously wrong. Amazing story that had me snorting with laughter and finding tears fill my eyes.

tastes just like chicken

Another wonderful story, just like the others, "bit different." It was a pleasure to read, and honestly I had a hard time leaving it, not because of the suspenseful moments (of which there were a few) but because you wanted to be with your new friends.

Loved it, but what about Matt and his parents?

I really enjoyed the story; however, I was sad about Holling. I would love to see what happens to Matt.

A little disappointing

My 13 yo daughter and I listened to Wednesday Wars and OK For Now and so we were super excited to hear Just Like That. Unfortunately it was not as engaging, fun, funny or interesting as the first two books in the series. It was a little disappointing to end the series with a book that was not as good as the others. The story was really slow to get going and even when it did start to progress more it wasn’t very compelling or believable. It also had some pretty graphic violence that I did not appreciate or enjoy. Overall I would say it was fine but not great. Don’t waste your time.
