About this listen

Veteran agent Lachlan Kite—"a spy for the 21st century" (Daily Mail)—reckons with the fallout from a mission in Senegal carried out early in his career.

1995: In the wake of the Rwandan genocide, twenty-four-year-old spy Lachlan Kite and his girlfriend, Martha Raine, are sent to Senegal on the trail of a hunted war criminal. The mission threatens to spiral out of control, forcing Kite to make choices which will have devastating consequences not only for his career at top-secret intelligence agency BOX 88, but also for his relationship with Martha.

2023: Eric Appiah, an old friend from Kite's days at school and an off-the-record BOX 88 asset, makes contact with explosive information about what happened all those years ago in West Africa. When tragedy strikes, Kite must use all the resources at his disposal to protect Martha from a criminal network with links to international terror.

Charles Cumming once again straddles two timelines to create a high-tension thriller in this latest Lachlan Kite novel.

So good even better than the other 2

I am a big fan of Cumming, one of the few writers left attempting espionage. The end of the Cold War pretty much decimated the genre and left us with action-adventure in place of the cerebral spy. My gripe with this book is that Cumming ended the story with a clumsy cliffhanger rather than trust that his audience will continue with Box 88 because it good. Instead, the last minute became a cheesy come on.

Good story, cheap ending

This is an outstanding novel in the distinctive Cumming style. Each scene is vividly brought to life. Really enjoyed the plot, the depth of the Box 88 characters, and the performance by the audiobook reader.

Couldn't put it aside...

Although this novel is action oriented and without emotional or intellectual depth the performance was really “off.” The speaker’s voice lacked depth, range, instead very superficial.

Difficult to stop listening. Well developed but imperfect characters the well Blended storylines. Can’t wait until the next one.

This was my least favorite of the series. It has zero action. It is a plot about telling a story. Kind of boring.
Make sure this one is at least on sale.

Not very exciting
