About this listen

When Zoë Boehm agrees to track down the gang who knocked over Sweeney’s jewellery shop, she certainly doesn’t expect to wind up in a coffin. But she’s about to become entangled with a strange collection of characters, starting with suicidal Tim Whitby, who’s dedicating what’s left of his life to protecting Katrina Blake from her late husband’s brothers, Arkle and Trent.

Unfortunately for Zoë, Arkle has a crossbow, Tim has nothing left to lose and even Katrina has her secrets.

First I enjoy this author & wanted to like this offering. When I cannot find one character to care for either good or evil, the story becomes flat

Slow and repetitive

Mr Herron has a lively imagination and ms Franklin is up to the task of developing the voices of the crazy criminals

Characters suitably crazy

Zoe Boeme is a clever, compelling woman and her cases always involve lots of twists and turns.

Great Lead Character & Narrator

I have been listening to Mick Herron’s Oxford series because of his wonderful slow horses series. I also like the main character Zoe and wanted to follow her, but I can’t take anymore. The stories are very slow and tedious. It takes forever for something to happen. For instance, finding a key takes what seems like an hour. I’m going to finish this book and do myself a favor and not read or listen to anymore Oxford series. I do not have a problem with the narration as some of the other reviews state however, the overall experience is just not fun.

This will be my last of this series!

Love Mick Herron, but this narrator should be on the stage, not reading books.

Narrator voice overwhelms

Perhaps it is the reader making the story so dull, or maybe the story itself is also just dull.

Not as good

Another great read/listen! How he manages to craft these funny and diabolically clever characters is truly a marvel. The vocal performance is incredible, I now look for any audio books she does, and she is one of my must listen presenters.

Well paced and unpredictable

I really like his style, especially as it relates to the Slow Horses series. This like all has complex scene/story line changes which without the benefit of seeing paragraph, chapter or page changes means the reader can't daydream as when these occur the story loses its sense.

Audible should advise/manage narratives to limit the highs and lows of the narrator's voice as many audio systems cannot handle them in conjunction with the deteriorating hearing of the demographic that listens to this type of book.

Complex story, needs attention.

An exciting tale, great narration. However in the final 2-3 chapters seems like the editors failed to complete their review. A few obvious misreads, pauses and corrections left on the tape rather than edited out.

Excellent story; well-read; poor audio edits

Entertaining in a macabre sort of way. Recommended for those who cherish Mick Herron and his cast of independence-tainted characters
