About this listen

Kept: An American Househusband in India is a hilarious, heart-warming tale of a company man turned trailing spouse when his wife gets his dream job and drags him halfway around the globe. World travelers and armchair tourists alike will marvel as Greg and Dana dine with royalty, smash an immigrant smuggling ring, flee angry mobs, foil a terrorist plot, and survive a Russian rocket assault. When they adopt an Indian girl, Greg embarks on an altogether new career, and India becomes a part of their lives forever. Winner of the PNWA Zola Award for best memoir, Kept: An American Househusband in India will have you scouring the house for cobras and wondering if you’ve got what it takes to walk on fire.

Charming story of an expat family in India

Read by the author, this is a delightful story of discovering India and of finding family. An enjoyable tale of the chaos of South Asia, culture shock, and learning to love where you are. Highly recommended for all travelers, prepare to laugh out loud.

I moved to India for a day

I couldn’t put this down! My friend and her family recently moved to Chennai to work for the US State Department just like Dana did. She recommended this book to give us a glimpse into her new life. The storytelling was funny, quick paced and thoughtful. I immediately bought Kept: Paris. As a stay at home mom of 5, who lives 5 miles from where I was born, this story gave me a taste of adventure and non-traditional lifestyle and family. I loved it!

An Endearingly Self Aware Tale of Life in the Foreign Service

I also own this book in hard copy but jumped at the chance to listen to it as an audiobook during a recent road trip. So glad I did!

Greg’s narration brings this unique story to life in a way that felt like a charismatic storyteller at a dinner party among close friends. His sense of humor matched the pace of reading and really allowed his wit and deadpan sarcasm to shine through. I found myself laughing out loud and groaning alongside the audio because I was that engrossed in it!

The story itself is truly mesmerizing, especially for those familiar with the Foreign Service lifestyle and living abroad. The author goes to great lengths to not sugar coat the experience and his candid recounting of his time in India were made contextually relatable and accessible to a broad audience who may not have the same international insight.

Best of all, this book is about real people in real situations. Greg does a fantastic job flushing out the ‘characters’ of his story, especially in the final few chapters. Some of the through-lines and happy endings had me tearing up.

I cannot wait to devour the next one in the series!

Great book, disappointing audible

Having thoroughly enjoyed the bright humor and delightful insights of the Kept books I recently read, I downloaded the Audible to share with my husband on a long drive. The entertaining written narrative is unfortunately lost in the ramble and monotone of the read. Hopefully this Audible will be re-recorded to better reach and enthuse its audience.
