About this listen

I’ve dedicated my life to slaying vampires. Now I’m about to offer up my blood.

When my brother gets into some serious trouble with the Vampire Clan of Baltimore, there’s only one thing I can do to save his ass.

I decide to offer myself up as a blood tribute, infiltrate their underground palace, and find a way to get him out.

But playing the part of a simpering blood bag is harder than I expected, especially when my first impulse is to put a stake through the heart of every vamp I meet. To make matters worse, I’ve somehow caught the eye of three dangerous vampire men:

Bastian, an ancient prince with features as cold as ice and eyes that burn like fire.

Rome, a darkly sexy rebel who just returned from a hundred-year banishment.

And Connor, a newly turned vampire whose lopsided grin is so devastatingly human that I almost forget he’s the enemy.

Even though I want to hate them all, they keep getting under my skin in ways I can’t explain. But if I let myself lose focus for even a second, it won’t just be me who pays for it. My brother will suffer too.

I’ve danced with the devil plenty of times…

But this time, the dance might kill me.

The Kingdom of Blood series is a paranormal vampire romance. The heroine is tough but flawed and the three (anti)heroes are sexy and dangerous.

Unique start to a vampire romance

This was my first Callie Rose series. The first book really hooked me. I enjoyed the atypical angle she started it from, as well as her character development. She also did a great job of not falling into that ditch so many romance authors stumble into - too much raunchy sex at awkward unrealistic monents. Sex that (instead of giving you crazy hot build up, leaving you craving more) has you either rolling your eyes with the ridiculousness of the scenario / over the top performance or just plain bores you to the point of skipping ahead. She "slayed" her first book. Sadly, that did not continue to be the case. The sex felt progressively more forced, awkward, and unrealistic as time went on. To the point that I was genuinely irritated that she kept screwing each guy instead of planning how to keep everyone she loves alive, knowing they're about to be hunted / if not already being hunted and that they are not hidden (at all) and have no plan of action.

Additionally, I don't feel like she ever really found "that thing" that made the harem situation believable for me. It went immediately from them all competing for her and bordering on aggression towards eachother to just being cool with sharing. Other good books I've read either start with the understanding that this is what these men are looking for, or there is some kind of life altering event or "magic" that changes things in an irrevocable kind of way, leaving no argument for the shift in attitude.

I also liked the lead less as time went on. I loved her at first. She had so much strength, but she was also smart and controlled. This woman (a slayer) put on the act of a tribute (allowing vamps to feed from her, and made them believe she wanted it!), all to save her brother. She was so impressive. Eventually, she just lost all those brains, all that control, and started acting like an idiot with no care for who it impacted, it was like Callie threw out the original person she'd been picturing and just started over with this reckless idiot with no strategy or concern for the danger she was putting everyone into (even the way she baited the men against expert eachother, but more so the way she made them look to the other vampires, knowing it would make them targets). Not to mention her need to control Jessica, and her petty jealousy over her best friend simply feeding her men (despite the fact that they all had to share her).

Finally, the ending also left something to be desired for me, as though it were somewhat incomplete. To be fair though, I'll admit to splitting hairs a little with many of those, as many can obviously be argued as preference.

Overall, I think Callie is a talented author (whether I agreed with every story / character arc or not) and I was also impressed by the narration (which I often struggle to find narrators whose voice and / or performance don't ruin it for me). I would definitely give both another go in the future, and would recommend them to others.

Great listen

Appreciated the world and character building. Spice was good, albeit a bit sparse. The story was I well done and I almost didn’t notice less spice than I would have anticipated. Will look for more from this author. Great narration, she’s awesome.

Pretty Good

I don't like the close minded hate by the MC that every vampire is awful in the first book but it gets better I suppose. Rome though, holy sh*t I can't quit fanning myself after those scenes. Woooooo! I think I'm in love with Rome haha
