About this listen

She had a long way to go from the wedding to becoming a wife.

When Lady Anne Sinclair vowed to marry before her spoiled beauty of a sister, she had no idea the "anyone" would be the marquess of Torrance. Long the darling of the town—and considered quite the confirmed bachelor—he succumbed to Annie's charms and almost magically made her his wife. But Annie's lifelong battle for attention had ill prepared her for married life. In a tipsy reverie on her wedding night, she blurted out her real reason for marrying the marquess, and her husband's formidable pride shut the door on any further communication.

Only a crisis of major proportions could bring the headstrong newlyweds together. And no less than the chancellor of the exchequer, with sinister political ambitions known only to himself, embroiled Annie in a dangerous plot that taught her the truth about her wifely sentiments.

Worth it! Worth a credit, worth the listening time. Lindy Nettleton and Marion Chesney make a great team as usual, and this is one of my favorites!

Love, love, LOVED IT

Not her best story, but certainly original and I’m so addicted to Marion Chesney/MC Beaton that I’ll support all of her works. Narrator does a fantastic job.

Not her best

I love her books but this main female character drives me up the wall! Surely women aren’t that ridiculous!!! At least I hope not.

It’s okay. Not my favorite.

I liked this simple cute story ,And was quite lucky to have such a sweet husband who is much wiser than she.

Cute story

In typical Beaton fashion, everything is exaggerated, which makes even a dull tale fun. Especially when narrated well. Not her best work, but it's worth it if you can get it on sale. The Marquis was the most intriguing character, and I do wish she had fleshed out his character more. We can tell he is observant and plays his cards low key but strategically. However, the farcical plot did have its tiresome points, Potential SPOILER*** The bratty sister who always gets Anne in trouble wears thin, but it's fun to see the nuances of how it plays out. One thing that would have made the story even more enjoyable is if Beaton had given Anne a better personality. I'd like to know why the Marquis found her attractive as a person. As it is, she sometimes comes across as simpering or petty as her sister.

Fun

I almost never give up a book once I start it but this story dragged on a theme of petty jealousy that made me want to shake the lead character! The only character with any type of substance was the Marquis, the rest was just a few sex scenes, a weak & murder plot. Give this one a miss.. Go to the Poor Relations series or the The Traveling Matchmaker, or The 6 sisters, literally any of them other than this one.

The worst of the 31 read so far …
