About this listen

Arranging a season for an unruly young lady whose habit is to enter drawing rooms by sliding down banisters presents a challenge at best - especially since the hoydenish Mira has a sister of incomparable grace and beauty.

Mira isn’t at all daunted by the local society and its ridiculous marriage mart. Her heart belongs to Lord Charles, who has been the object of her dreams ever since she was a child. But alas, Charles has eyes only for her ever-perfect sister, Drusilla.

Along the sidelines, the Marquess of Grantley enjoys Mira’s jealous antics - although pushing her sister into the fountains has practically ruined her social cachet. It is up to him to restore her to respectability and make her an eligible bride once again. When he succeeds, however, the lovelorn marquess will begin to wish he had left well enough alone.

Dreadful Debutant is the wrong title for this delightful rom com. Marquis and the truth” might be more appropriate.

Wrong title

This was a sweet story. It follows the usual patterns of balls and proper presentation of daughters to find husbands.
The narrator was wonderful.

Enjoyed

Sweet and funny romance. Nice that there are love stories without all the trashy sex scenes.

Great little story

I liked it. There were many very funny moments. The romance was adorable, and I loved how much jealousy there was - lol in Regency novels that is usually glossed over, but this one really showed off the true nature of those worried about what others think.

There are 2 issues I have, though. First the writing style jumps from one topic & and pov to another in the same chapter...it gets confusing. Also, the narrator was way too slow. I turned up the speed to 1.15.

Other than that I enjoyed the story.

Cute

I’ve always enjoyed these Chesney Regencies, even when I’ve listened to them before. Sure, there are some implausibilities, but they’re still fun to use as light fare between more serious books.

Fun

Where does The Dreadful Debutante rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Dreadful Debutante was a light read. The characters were interesting and the dialogue was fun to listen to. A nice audio book to listen to at the end of the day. Nothing heavy or too dramatic or vulgar.

Have you listened to any of Lindy Nettleton’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Lindy Nettleton does a great job narrating, as always.

Enjoyable, lighthearted historical romance.

I really struggled to finish this book. I think the story could have been less whiney and the females less petulant. The ending was quite abrupt. I think this book has a lot of potential to be a really good story if more time and editing was done. I have to say I'm glad it was free. The narrator seems to me to be older and didn't fit the voices of the characters.

mediocre

It’s hard for me to judge how good or bad the story was because the narration so detracted from it. The narrator’s voice was pleasant on its own, but terrible at both the male and female characters. The women’s voices in particular came out high and squeaky. At one point when excited, the lead character sounded much like Miss Piggy from the Muppets. Other voices sounded very fake like silly cartoon characters. I didn’t know whether to laugh or be aggravated at some parts, and it had nothing to do with the plot. It was extremely distracting.

Narrator’s voice for characters very distracting.

The story was a fun one, but Predictable. The narration was okay but it seemed that the reader got confused with her voice changes once in a while.

Fun but Predictable!
