About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Annis Wychwood delights in her independence.

Beautiful, rich and far too busy for love, she has turned down the advances of many a hopeful suitor.

But when she becomes entangled in the affairs of a runaway heiress, she encounters the girl's guardian, the notorious Oliver Carleton. While Oliver may be a reckless and uncivil rogue, Annis can't help but be drawn towards his wild ways.

"One of my perennial comfort authors. Heyer's books are as incisively witty and quietly subversive as any of Jane Austens'." (Joanne Harris)

"Rapturously romantic." (Katie Fforde)

"Georgette Heyer is second to none." (Sunday Times)

Not my favorite Heyer

Still worth the read. Performance a bit too abrupt and jerky for me. Made it harder to follow the continuity of the storyline. Very different from other Audible Heyer recordings.

Lively, enjoyable characters - not the usual

The reader was not able to perform the male voices well at all, and particularly failed with Mr. Carleton and Ninian Elmore. She also made a couple of mistakes. For example, she misread "oars" as "ears."

Georgette Heyer at her best

Delightful and great fun with an excellent narrator. Lots of period detail too. Highly recommended.

Wonderful!

Georgette Heyer has long been a favorite of mine. I've been reading and rereading her books for over 40 years. I'm so pleased to find her on Audible. Her work is light and witty. I thought the narrator did a fine job. Can't wait to listen to more Heyer work!

not one of her best

I love georgette heyer, but this isn't one of my favorites of hers. it's fine, but I think maybe it's because the plot is a little boring.

Fine Wine

Late, especially last works are often revered for ripened mastery. This is not the case with Georgette, who is said to have rushed out her final work for ready cash. But I like this love story. It’s in her “Beauty and the Beast” mode, like the well-loved Venetia. A no longer young beauty too intelligent to have married meets a rake too intelligent to pass her up. Wit tinged with wistfulness, like Shakespeare’s Tempest. Hope Georgette enjoyed a last fling.

Horrible narration..

Narrator completely ruined a serviceable book. I look to Heyer for a relaxing, amusing romp. This stilted and monotone narration ruins the book.

The narrator did this tight grating thing with her voice for certain characters that was untenable.

As far as I could listen, I liked the story. And I didn’t think that the narrator was bad. She just chose to do this very tight grating thing with her throat for certain characters -I think more the men. maybe because she thought it would sound different for those characters to set them apart. She didn’t do it all the time. So I tried to hang in there, but it was so painful to listen to. I finally had to give up. I just couldn’t take it. It was dreadful. and Audible would not let me return the book. I hope this review will help someone else not lose a credit. I would say try one of this authors other books with a different narrator.
