Publisher's summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The Honourable Christopher Fancot, on leave from the diplomatic service in the summer of 1817, is startled to find his entrancing but incorrigibly extravagant mother on the brink of financial and social ruin - and more than alarmed to find that his twin, Evelyn, has disappeared without trace. Christopher - Kit - is forced into an outrageous masquerade by the tangled affairs of his wayward family: his rigid uncle, Lord Brumby; the surprisingly wily Sir Bonamy Ripple; the formidable old Lady Stavely and Evelyn's betrothed, Cressy. But in the face of Evelyn's continues absence, Kit's ingenuity is stretched to the limit....

In this typically wonderful and sweeping romance, Georgette Heyer shows all the skill that made her the queen of historical fiction for over 50 years - and won her a huge audience that continues to this day.

Excellent!

This actor did an excellent portrayal. Old Lady Stavely and Sir Bonamy were spot on! I’ve read this book many times and have heard those voices in my head as I read it. I appreciate that they did not abridge it as they have some Heyer’s books. The character development and witty dialogue is what makes her books so good.

Wonderful fun!

Heyer’s books are a delight, and this is one of my favorites. The narrator really brought her sparkling dialogue to life with his excellent performance.

plotless

Miss Heyer's books are split into 2 categories: mystery or plotless. This book is charming but what it amounts to is everybody's problems can be solved with love and money. There's no challenging villain, no mysterious happenings. It takes half the book to find out what happened to the missing twin but it's not a big deal. So half of the book is getting tangled in deception and then the other half is getting untangled again.

G.H. fans will enjoy it. Those of us who would like more intrigue in our plots will be rather bored.

A favorite!

This book of twins, one of whom takes another’s place for an evening to save embarrassment & is drawn deeper & deeper shows the love between mother & sons beautifully and is full of fun besides. The characters of the family as well as the intended fiancée & her grandmama and the mother’s most devoted admirer are expressed most completely.

A Charming Romance

I thoroughly enjoyed the twisting and turning storyline of this romance. The masterly sketching of characters that is a signature from Georgette Heyer's pen saves the plot from improbability. I was in a constant ripple of laughter as I reread and then listened to this book perhaps for the third time. It is one of my favorites and I have read everyone of her books, many multiple times! It is pure enjoyment!

improves with age

This is one of Heyer's that I found a little hard to get into when I was younger, when I wanted my characters to be basically perfect. Now I prefer my characters to be interesting - and this book is full of those. And ultimately, I found the majority of the characters endearing. Flawed, but endearing.
The humour isn't typical of Heyer, but it's still there - more ironical or slightly mocking (although not jeeringly). To me this speaks to the versatility of Heyer, that she could depart from those "frothy" plots (but this may be why this isn't one of her more popular novels).
The narration was pretty good

Very slow moving

Not for me. Not a lot happening. I didn’t finish it so maybe it got more exciting in the end

Elderly Amors

The premise and execution of the novel are lower drawer Georgette and the performance mediocre. One perhaps better read than heard, if you’re a completist.
