About this listen
Newbery Medalist Russell Freedman’s thrilling account of a daring young French nobleman who helped bring victory at Yorktown and who became a lifelong friend of President Washington will fascinate young historians.
When the Marquis de Lafayette ran off to join the American Revolution against the explicit orders of the king of France, he was a strong-willed 19-year-old who had never set foot on a battlefield. Although the U.S. Congress granted him an honorary commission only out of respect for his title and wealth, Lafayette quickly earned the respect of his fellow officers with his bravery, devotion to the cause of liberty, and incredible drive. Playing a pivotal role in the Revolution, Lafayette convinced the French government to send troops, made crucial pacts with Native Americans, and led his men to victory at Yorktown.

Story
The kingdom of Cornucopia was once the happiest in the world. It had plenty of gold, a king with the finest moustache you could possibly imagine, and butchers, bakers, and cheesemongers whose exquisite foods made a person dance with delight when they ate them. Everything was perfect - except for the misty Marshlands to the north, which, according to legend, were home to the monstrous Ickabog. Anyone sensible knew that the Ickabog was just a myth to scare children into behaving. But the funny thing about myths is that sometimes they take on a life of their own.

Rediscovered a Hero
Listened to this with my history loving 9 year old. Mr. Freedman and the narrator, Luis Moreno, made the story of Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette entertaining, educational, and compelling! Sadly this Hero of Two Countries seems forgotten in France and the United States. Thankfully, we rediscovered Lafayette through this wonderful audiobook.

Short, but very sweet!
A simple and chronological telling of Lafayette's life story. True to the times and well read, I thoroughly enjoyed this audible book. I plan to seek a more detailed account to satisfy my urge for detail. I highly recommend this book as your introduction to General Lafayette and his passion for liberty and love of America!

Well Done
As mentioned in other reviews, short but very well done. Having read many books on the American Revolution and being a student of early American history, Lafayette's name was familiar. Here we get to know him and how many more accolades he deserves it we are truly embracing how our country was birthed. Here a man who began as an impetuous awkward boy became a man committed to virtue and left a legacy of freedom.

Fantastic account and narration of an indispensable man
This was so thoroughly and clearly told. The engaging narrative style held our whole family captive as we learned about the person behind the historic events that happened right near where we live. I feel like Lafayette is now a dear friend.
