About this listen
Sudden, extreme deaths have always fascinated us - and now more than ever as athletes and travelers rise to the challenges of high-risk sports and journeys on the edge. In this spellbinding audiobook, veteran travel and outdoor sports writer Peter Stark reenacts the dramas of what happens inside our bodies, our minds, and our souls when we push ourselves to the absolute limits of human endurance.
Combining the adrenaline high of extreme sports with the startling facts of physiological reality, Stark narrates a series of outdoor adventure stories in which thrill can cross the line to mortal peril. Each death or brush with death is at once a suspense story, a cautionary tale, and a medical thriller.
Stark describes in unforgettable detail exactly what goes through the mind of a cross-country skier as his body temperature plummets - apathy at 91 degrees, stupor at 90. He puts us inside the body of a doomed kayaker tumbling helplessly underwater for two minutes, five minutes, 10 minutes. He conjures up the physiology of a snowboarder frantically trying not to panic as he consumes the tiny pocket of air trapped around his face under thousands of pounds of snow.
These are among the dire situations that Stark transforms into harrowing accounts of how our bodies react to trauma, how reflexes and instinct compel us to fight back, and how, why, and when we let go of our will to live.
In an increasingly tamed and homogenized world, risk is not only a means of escape but a path to spirituality. As Peter Stark writes, "You must try to understand death intimately and prepare yourself for death in order to live a full and satisfying life."
In this fascinating, informative audio, Stark reveals exactly what we're getting ourselves into when we choose to live - and die - at the extremes of endurance.

Story
At a time when the edge of American settlement barely reached beyond the Appalachian Mountains, two visionaries, President Thomas Jefferson and millionaire John Jacob Astor, foresaw that one day the Pacific would dominate world trade as much as the Atlantic did in their day. Just two years after the Lewis and Clark expedition concluded in 1806, Jefferson and Astor turned their sights westward once again. Thus began one of history's dramatic but largely forgotten turning points in the conquest of the North American continent.

For those who could read between the lines, the censored news out of China was terrifying. But the president insisted there was nothing to worry about. Fortunately, we are still a nation of skeptics. Fortunately, there are those among us who study pandemics and are willing to look unflinchingly at worst-case scenarios. Michael Lewis’ taut and brilliant nonfiction thriller pits a band of medical visionaries against the wall of ignorance that was the official response of the Trump administration to the outbreak of COVID-19.

Full of extraordinary facts (your body made a million red blood cells since you started reading this) and irresistible Bryson-esque anecdotes, The Body will lead you to a deeper understanding of the miracle that is life in general and you in particular. As Bill Bryson writes, "We pass our existence within this wobble of flesh and yet take it almost entirely for granted."

Story
Science is a force for good in the world—at least usually. But sometimes, when obsession gets the better of scientists, they twist a noble pursuit into something sinister. Under this spell, knowledge isn’t everything, it’s the only thing—no matter the cost. Bestselling author Sam Kean tells the true story of what happens when unfettered ambition pushes otherwise rational men and women to cross the line in the name of science, trampling ethical boundaries and often committing crimes in the process.

The infectious tales and astounding details in The Disappearing Spoon follow carbon, neon, silicon, and gold as they play out their parts in human history, finance, mythology, war, the arts, poison, and the lives of the (frequently) mad scientists who discovered them.

In August 1897, the young Belgian commandant Adrien de Gerlache set sail for a three-year expedition aboard the good ship Belgica with dreams of glory. His destination was the uncharted end of the earth: the icy continent of Antarctica. But de Gerlache’s plans to be first to the magnetic South Pole would swiftly go awry. After a series of costly setbacks, the commandant faced two bad options: turn back in defeat and spare his men the devastating Antarctic winter, or recklessly chase fame by sailing deeper into the freezing waters.

Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds.

Story
Despite her success setting a self-supported Fastest Known Time record on the Pacific Crest Trail in 2013, Heather “Anish” Anderson still had such deep-seated insecurities that she became convinced her feat had been a fluke. So two years later she set out again, this time hiking through mud, rocks, and mountain blazes to crush her constant self-doubt and seek the true source of her strength and purpose. The 2,189 miles of the Appalachian Trail, from Maine to Georgia, did not make it easy.

Story
At the beginning of his memoir Life Lived Wild: Adventures at the Edge of the Map, Rick Ridgeway tells us that if you add up all his many expeditions, he’s spent over five years of his life sleeping in tents: “And most of that in small tents pitched in the world’s most remote regions.” It’s not a boast so much as an explanation. Whether at elevation or raising a family back at sea level, those years taught him, he writes, “to distinguish matters of consequence from matters of inconsequence.” He leaves it to his listeners to do the final sort of which is which.

Story
On June 21, 1992, two best friends summited Mount Rainier. Within hours, their exquisite accomplishment would be overshadowed by tragedy. On their descent, Jim Davidson fell through an ice bridge on Rainier's northeast flank, plunging eighty feet into a narrow crevasse inside the Emmons Glacier and dragging Mike Price in after him. Mike fell to his death; Jim, badly injured and armed with minimal gear, faced an almost impossible climb back out of the crevasse, up a nearly vertical ice wall.

Story
It's the most important rule of scuba diving: If you don't feel right, don't go down. So after her father falls ill, 12-year-old Julie Sims must take over and lead two of his clients on a dive miles off the coast of Alabama while her father stays behind in the boat. When the clients, a reckless boy Julie's age and his equally foolhardy father, disregard Julie's instructions during the dive, she quickly realizes she's in over her head. And once she surfaces, things only get worse: One of the clients is in serious condition, and their dive boat has vanished.

Story
Henry Worsley spent his life idolizing Ernest Shackleton, the 19th-century polar explorer who tried to become the first person to reach the South Pole and later sought to cross Antarctica on foot. Worsley felt an overpowering connection to those expeditions. In 2008, Worsley set out across Antarctica with two other descendants of Shackleton's crew, battling the freezing, desolate landscape and life-threatening physical exhaustion. He soon felt compelled to go back. In 2015, Worsley bid farewell to his family and embarked on his most perilous quest: to walk across Antarctica alone.

Frank and fair. A must for adventurers
Educational. Entertaining. Thought Provoking.
As an Outdoor Emergency Care (National Ski Patrol) Instructor, I was intriqued by the details of the injuries and ultimate death from these adventure accidents. Hypothermia for me please. The Inuits would wonder off onto the ice when they felt no longer able to contribute to their families. I can understand the wisdom in this after reading the description of a rather pleasant way to pass on to the next life. This seems a grizzly topic, but every outdoor adventurer is intimately aware of the dangers and consequenses of his or her miscalculations, and Last Breath describes fairly what must go through our minds as this life leaves our earthly limbs.

A Very Nice Surprise!
I haven't listened to audiobooks for awhile. Imagine my delight when I bought this wonderful book and found it to be a 5 star work. It is read by the author, something which most authors are not qualified to do. It is very refreshing, even though it is about death. It is very scientific but not dull or overly technical. A must-read for anybody who loves information about anything including mortality.

He lets a couple live
Excellent. Informative and interesting stories in which to frame the information. It is a bit morbid but I am a wilderness first responder and ski patroller and this worked as a good refresher to help me keep in mind what is going on. I have recomended sections of this to be used for intructional purposes.

Utterly fascinating
What a treat to have found this book. I was fascinated from start to finish. Stark does an outstanding job of weaving together the physiology and humanity of each case, so that you feel like you're the victim of the story, and yet get to understand what's going on from a third-person perspective. I highly recommend this book!

Excellent!
I've been a member of Audible for over a year, and this is by far the most compelling book I've listened to yet. Stark goes into incredible detail in describing what happens on the edge of the death. His narration keeps you listening... I've listened to this book twice and made my friends listen to specific segments of it, and they also found it fascinating. Especially the first one on hypothermia.

Missing chapters
I LOVE this book and was excited to be able to 'read' it again with the audio book. I was let down when I realized that not every chapter is here. wjats there is great. would be better if ALL the book was included. I've never heard of an audio book being only part of the written book.

Interesting concept.....
...but be warned -- only the research in this book is non-fiction. The tales themselves are all fictional accounts, which I found quite disappointing. It might have taken a bit more time to dig up real accounts, but it would have made for a much more gripping read.

An old favorite!
I read this one a long time ago and nearly squealed when I saw it was available on audible. Absolutely worth spending a credit on. Each chapter is fascinating both from a science perspective, (what DOES happen to a human body when it drowns?) and from a literary perspective (is that poor Eastern European cyclist going to live?). The entire book is fabulous. Super easy to listen to, and so disappointing when you realize you don’t have any more chapters to read. I could easily do 40 more hours of this.

Marvelously well told physiological tales
As a long time biologist and lover of fine words this audiobook is a double pleasure! I share excerpts of these stories with my Anatomy & Physiology classes at appropriate times during my lectures. An added bonus is provided with the author's own voice doing a splendid job on the narration. Great job, Stark! You make me, and my students feel as if we were there with the 'victims' of your examples.
