About this listen

New York Times best-selling author Hazel Gaynor has joined with Heather Webb to create this unforgettably romantic novel of the Great War.

August 1914. England is at war. As Evie Elliott watches her brother, Will, and his best friend, Thomas Harding, depart for the front, she believes - as everyone does - that it will be over by Christmas, when the trio plan to celebrate the holiday among the romantic cafés of Paris.

But as history tells us, it all happened so differently....

Evie and Thomas experience a very different war. Frustrated by life as a privileged young lady, Evie longs to play a greater part in the conflict - but how? - and as Thomas struggles with the unimaginable realities of war, he also faces personal battles back home, where War Office regulations on press reporting cause trouble at his father's newspaper business. Through their letters Evie and Thomas share their greatest hopes and fears - and grow ever fonder from afar. Can love flourish amid the horror of the First World War, or will fate intervene?

Christmas 1968. With failing health, Thomas returns to Paris - a cherished packet of letters in hand - determined to lay to rest the ghosts of his past. But one final letter is waiting for him....

Full narrative cast includes Alex Wyndham, Billie Fulford-Brown, Morag Sims, Gary Furlong, Greg Wagland, Antony Ferguson, Derek Perkins, Jane Copland, and Mary Jane Wells.

Enjoyed this book immensely. A little predictable but worth the time. Refreshing to listen to a nook set in WW I.

True love and war

Don’t be deceived by the title- this is not really a Christmas story. Instead it is a story of love and sacrifice during WWI.

1914–As WWI begins Evie Elliot’s brother Will and his best friend, Thomas Harding enlist to help out their beloved country, Great Britain. While all three romanticize war, reality soon sets in. They all believe the war will be over by Christmas, but the war and its toll rage on for years.

This story is, at times, a simple love story; however, as the war continues with its death and destruction, the consequences become clear.

So beautifully written. What a great story. I loved the performance and the choice to use different actors for each character.

I loved the back and fourth of the letters during the war. It gave me great insight and helped me feel the experience. The voices were perfect! Since it is letters, you have to listen closely to the names of to and from, so you don’t get confused. It was such a sweet story of love, heartache, and simple gratitude.

Such a great listen! Heartfelt and warming!

The narration is exquisite. I wasn't convinced that I would enjoy the narrative device in this novel, but it quickly became one of my favorite listens of the year.

Beautifully done

Loved the difference voice actors/actresses to distinguish between characters, but the story itself was wonderful! I will be sharing with friends.

I enjoy a book most when I care about the characters and in this case I was entranced by the relationship of Tom and Evie. This book is a delightful read especially at Christmastime.

This was a beautiful story of love from the unique perspective of letters! I wonder if we could form such a lasting and inspiring love in this age of instant messages?
