Publisher's summary

Two teens, one stuck atoning for her sins and one destined for heaven, fall in love in purgatory in this darkly hilarious and heartfelt rom-com, perfect for fans of The Good Place.

Beatrice Fox deserves to go straight to hell. At least, that's what she believes. Her last day on Earth, she ruined the life of the person she loves most - her little sister, Emmy. So when Bea awakens from a fatal car accident to find herself on an airplane headed who knows where, she's confused, to say the least.

Once on the ground, Bea receives some truly harrowing news: She's in purgatory. If she ever wants to catch a flight to heaven, she'll have to help 5,000 souls figure out what's keeping them from moving on.

But one of Bea's first assignments is Caleb, the boy who caused her accident, and the last person Bea would ever want to send to the pearly gates. And as much as Bea would love to see Caleb suffer for dooming her to a seemingly endless future of eating bad airport food and listening to other people's problems, she can't help but notice that he's kind of cute, and sort of sweet, and that maybe, despite her best efforts, she's totally falling for him.

Now, determined to make the most of her time in purgatory, Bea must decide what is truly worth dying for - romance or revenge.

Surprisingly Good

I almost dorky l didn't choose this because the reviews were consistently rough for identical reasons but I'm so glad I did. Reviewer's generally hate the main character but that's sort of the point. Its that dislike that is a super good reason to hear her story in its entirely and see if you've learned anything about yourself on the way. Plus if I put down every book with an unlikable character in it I'd be stuck with rereading the cat in the hat for the rest of my life! I hope you enjoy your time either way...

This going to be a HIT!

Layover is one of the best books I’ve read in a really long time! The idea is very cool. And they way she writes in details without being wordy is great. Fans of “The Good Place” will love this book. It’s poignant in a way only YA novels can be. But is also sooooo relatable as an adult.

Wonderful

Very cute story about what happens to souls when they are in purgatory and want to get to Heaven. I love the plot twist with Bea. Very entertaining and kept me on the edge of my seat!

Inventive and angst-filled

Really enjoyed this story! Loved the imaginative take on the hereafter and found myself laughing at the descriptions and characters. I adore angsty stories and this one has it in abundance. Vert unputdownable!

I want more!

I loved this book so much!

The main character dies tragically then gets sent to an airport to help other people move on to the other side. Since finishing this book, I have tried to find more books like it, but to no avail.

Listening to this was like purgatory for me

Other reviews convinced me this would be a thought-provoking, interesting read. But the main character's extremely self-centered, shallow logic and lack of any spiritual depth were depressing. Listening to this audiobook made me feel like I was in purgatory. About midway, I finally clicked to read the last chapter and discovered the completely unsatisfying ending, so I quit reading, glad to have escaped.
