About this listen

What If It's Us meets They Both Die at the End in this postapocalyptic, queer YA adventure romance from debut author Erik J. Brown. Perfect for fans of Adam Silvera, Alex London, and Heartstopper by Alice Oseman.

When Andrew stumbles upon Jamie’s house, he’s injured, starved, and has nothing left to lose. A deadly pathogen has killed off most of the world’s population, including everyone both boys have ever loved. And if this new world has taught them anything, it’s to be scared of what other desperate people will do . . . so why does it seem so easy for them to trust each other?

After danger breaches their shelter, they flee south in search of civilization. But something isn’t adding up about Andrew’s story, and it could cost them everything. And Jamie has a secret, too. He’s starting to feel something more than friendship for Andrew, adding another layer of fear and confusion to an already tumultuous journey.

The road ahead of them is long, and to survive, they’ll have to shed their secrets, face the consequences of their actions, and find the courage to fight for the future they desire, together. Only one thing feels certain: all that’s left in their world is the undeniable pull they have toward each other.

A New Favorite!

First off, narrators we're excellent. The two readers really convey the separate characters well. The story captivated me the entire time. Maybe this won't be true for everyone but there was never any down time. I loved the characters so much it took me double the time to finish this one. A mixture of fear and love kept me finishing the book and avoiding it in case something happened to the characters.

I was worried that it would end up being political like the other reviewers said but I think it handled it well. It talks about the reaction to COVID a little so if that is too much for you maybe don't but I found all of it's points agreeable without feeling pandering or preachy. If you're reading LGBT novels in the first place you probably have heard the points before but even I was surprised and learned a thing or two.

Easily done in one sitting

This book isn't exactly short. It's a ~ten hour listen. But holy crap, is this book good.

The story is compelling and the characters are so easy to fall in love with. Watching them fall for each other is incredibly sweet and so natural.

The VAs do an incredible job of bringing these boys to life and the emotion they bring can be so raw at times, I've been brought to tears.

I honestly can't wait for more from Erik Brown. He's done such a wonderful job on his debut novel, he's already an author you want to follow.

Good post-apocalyptic LGBTQ÷+ representation

I really loved this story and the worldbuilding involved. I lived in the northeast for much of my life, so it was fun seeing areas in rural NEPA get a little literary love.

The trials and tribulations our MCs have on their journey are honestly pretty realistic and appropriately terrifying. I think that post-COVID, this novel really resonates with a scary and relatable depiction of our pandemic reality.

Also love the two cinnamon rolls featured! Both really well characterized, and the chemistry is great.

Enjoyable and entertaining

Think COVID meets The Walking Dead with a slow burn gay love story at the core. It’s nice to have representation of queer characters. The characters were lovable and I could identify with parts of each of them. This was an enjoyable listen that I would recommend.

Good read

This was a pretty good book. The performance was excellent. The story line reminded me a lot of popular tv shows that already exist and I didn’t love that. However, the story was interesting. It kept me listening and wanting to hear more.

A beautiful Book

This was a beautiful, quick book to listen to.

The characterization of Andrew and Jamison is amazing, and Brown works well to blend together both a broken world, hope for a future yet unseen, and the dangers that can be rather inherent in a world that was destroyed.

This book made me laugh, made me cry, made me ponder just what kind of a world we live in, and whether or not human nature would go the way no one would like it to go.
