About this listen

"It's a meditative act," they said. But it's far from meditative for Alexandra Heminsley when yet another wave slams into her face. It's survival. When she laced up her shoes in Running Like a Girl, all she had to do to become a runner was to get out there and run. But swimming is something else entirely. The water is all-consuming, confusing her every move, sabotaging every breath. Determined, Alexandra will learn to adapt, find new strengths, and learn to work with the water. She does not want to stand on the beach looking at the sea any longer. She wants to leap in. In doing so she will learn not just how to accept herself but how to accept what lies beyond. Soon she will be able to see water anywhere in the world and sense not fear but adventure. She will dive into water as she hopes to dive into life. And it has nothing to do with being "sporty" or being the correct shape for a swimsuit.

This is a fantastic book for those looking to get their feet wet swimming, open water or in the pool. Heminsley is witty, fun and enthusiastic about the sport; a most enjoyable listen.

A wealth of knowledge with a side of humor!

Overall, I found "Leap In" to be an enjoyable read. I've been a swimmer most of my life and a triathlete for many years; so, I could relate to a lot of what the author discussed, although she is a bit disparaging of triathletes. Her description of her personal experiences is vulnerable and entertaining. This would have been a great book to read when I was first getting into triathlon. I was not particularly interested in history of swimming presented by the author. When she went into her tips, I thought perhaps I would find a new "nugget" of information, but that was not the case. If someone has any basic open water experience, that part can likely just be skipped.

Combination memoir and reference.
