Publisher's summary
Another fun, uplifting romcom from the author of Where There's a Will, perfect for fans of Jo Watson, Laura Jane Williams and Sophie Kinsella.
When all else fails, you just have to leave it to fate....
Just as 29-year-old Ella loses her dream job after an unfortunate incident (it was just a bit of hot sauce, for goodness' sake - he totally overreacted!), her phone rings. Her aunt Gillian, who lives in a tiny mountain village, has had a fall and needs her help. Ella gives in to fate and agrees to go, looking forward to a few quiet weeks to work out what to do with her car crash of a life.
But as soon as she gets there, she realises it's not going to be the idyllic break she had hoped for. With Gillian struggling after the recent loss of her partner, Mike, Ella promises herself that she will show Gillian that life is still worth living - and will certainly not be distracted from her new purpose by Joe, Mike's disconcertingly handsome nephew....
Has Fate brought Ella and Gillian together at just the right time for them both? And do her plans extend to Ella's love life, as well?

Story
Lou is reeling from a triple whammy of shocks that have left her loveless, jobless and almost homeless. Staying for a night with an old friend in the Cotswold village of Foxwell, she lends a helping hand to a spectacularly ungrateful older man with a reputation in the village for being a 'character'. When Edgar makes a suggestion that would solve two out of three of Lou's problems in one fell swoop, it's hard to resist. Especially as the return to the village of the very attractive Remy—not that he's even noticed Lou!—makes it an unusually appealing place to live.

Living with him is far from ideal, especially when he claims the best room, has loud parties - and the least said about his kitchen manner the better. Story
In the fading town of Rooster, Texas, all that's really left is a service station, a church…and the Banty House, a long-ago Depression-era brothel. For more than seventy-five years, Betsy, Connie, and Kate Carson have called their mama's house a home. The three eccentric sisters get by just fine with their homemade jams and jellies, a little moonshine on the side, and big hearts always open to strangers. Like Ginger Andrews.

City girl Sophie has married the prince (or landed gentry - close enough), moved to his pile (which is more accurate a description than she’d anticipated) and is set to live happily ever after - until she finds the other half of her perfect life in the stables with the stable girl, and they’re definitely not grooming the horses. Shocked and appalled, Sophie’s no happier to learn that she’s supposed to 'just get on with it'. After all, according to her mother-in-law, she got the title...they even overlooked her family’s ‘new money’ status.

Story
The perfect escapist listen, for all fans of Cathy Bramley and Scarlett Bailey. A Year at the Star and Sixpence is Holly Hepburn's four Star and Sixpence novellas collected together as a novel for the first time. When sisters Nessie and Sam inherit a little pub in a beautiful country village, they jump at the chance to escape their messy lives and start afresh. But when they arrive at the Star and Sixpence, it's not quite what they imagined - it's pretty much derelict, ruined by debts, and it's going to be a huge job....

Publisher's summary is misleading.
The publisher's summary calls this a fun, uplifting romcom. I rated the book five starts overall, performance and story. But this is definitely not a fun romcom. It could be called uplifting, in that some serious problems get solved with good will. But this is not a fun story. This is a story of the problems of aging. About getting physically weaker and more fragile, and getting emotionally less flexible and burdened with memories of a loved one who has passed. The theme also touches on cognitive decline and elder abuse.
