About this listen

In the new thriller featuring hostage rescue expert Jonathan Grave, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author John Gilstrap takes listeners on an action-packed thrill ride from the wilds of Montana to the streets of Mexico, as a sniper attack turns wilderness hunters into the hunted and Grave's enemies stalk him with a vengeance....

Hostage rescue expert Jonathan Grave and his fellow special-ops veteran, Boxers, are hunting in Montana when shots ring out, and they realize they've become the prey for assassins. In the crosshairs of unseen shooters, cut off from all communication, with the wind at a blood-freezing chill, the nightmare is just beginning. Because Jonathan and Boxers aren't the only ones under fire.

Back in Fisherman's Cove, Virginia, Jonathan's Security Solutions team is fighting for their lives too. A vicious onslaught is clearing the way for a much bigger game by eliminating anyone in the way. If Jonathan and Boxers can make it out of the wilderness alive, the real war will begin.

Big fan of the series but latest book has an issue

There is so much good to say about this series and I have read or listen to just about every single book. Every summer, I look forward to reading / hearing the next installment. The stories are exciting and engaging, the banter between Digger and Boxers is always fun and the action is always front and center and expertly articulated. Over the last several books he has been expanding on the character development of several of the secondary characters. This all serves to keep the books interesting and growing/improving.

Basil Sands is a great narrater and is really able to bring life to all the characters in the books, no matter male or female and no matter the accents - first rate!

Now for the issue - while his stories always have corrupt politicians, and there certainly are a number of them out there, he has always kept specific right-wing political drivel off the table. In this book, there were at least 2-3 instances of him veering off into that traffic lane making me pull back from enjoying the story and thinking to my self, "well, hold on a min!"

So I remain a fan of the series and Gilstraps's writing but was just tweaked by a few areas he was (presumably) trying to sneak in commentary that, for me, detracted from the otherwise great stories.

Gilstrap does it again!

Audiobook Review – Lethal Game – John Gilstrap
Finished Author John Gilstrap’s “Lethal Game” while on quarantine from Covid. Lethal Game features one of my favorite lesser-known protagonists in hostage rescue expert Jonathan Grave. Gilstrap takes readers on an action-packed thrill ride from the wild, wide open spaces of Montana to the crowded streets of Mexico, as a sniper attack turns wilderness hunters into the hunted and Grave's enemies into assassins as they stalk him with a vengeance. Grave and his former special-ops partner, Boxers, are hunting in Montana when they realize they've become the prey for unannounced killers. Back in Fisherman's Cove, Virginia, Grave’s Security Solutions team is fighting for their lives as well. John Gilstrap does ‘another’ fantastic job in this the 14th installment in the Jonathan Grave series. The book works well as a standalone and is instantly engaging with super-fast paced action and an intense and suspenseful plotline. The superb banter between Grave and Boxers is back, and the character development as usual is indicative of Gilstrap’s exceptional writing. Gilstrap even develops strong and complex bad guys which really adds to the storyline. His writing always seems to help me understand what the characters are thinking, and this is an incredible writing capability. Lethal Game is engrossing, electrifying, and intriguing. It is a spectacular action thriller read and the series is sadly too underrated in the genre in my opinion. Basil Sands was superb as usual on John Gilstrap's audiobooks. He is the voice of Jonathan Grave and Boxers...

Story felt rushed

I am a fan of this series but this story felt forced. The characters were good as usual but the rationale wasn't there and the senseless killing of women and children just didn't make sense. Also the ending was anticlimactic. Overall a decent listen but the joy wasn't there for me this time around.

Fast Paced and Action Packed!!!!

This is a really good addition to the Jonathan Graves series. It is super fast paced. There is nonstop action right from the very beginning.
Jonathan and Boxers are out on a hunting trip when they realize that they themselves are also being hunted. It doesn’t take long before their pursuers are taken care of. They soon learn that their friends at home have also been attacked. Being the professionals that they are, the squad sent to kill them had the same fate as their friends. Now, the question is who are these men? Who sent them? And why?
This is the 14th book in the series. Although I prefer listening to a series in order for the developing and changing relationships, this series need not be listened to in the order it was written and each book can be listened to as a standalone with enough background information given in each.
Basil Sands did a great job narrating.
This book is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
